i dont own a Apple TV , but have seen people talking about jail breaking apple TV .. what is the use for jail breaking Apple Tv ..where you still be paying for rentals?

Apps, and playing other formats that aren't iTunes friendly.

but playing what? why would you want to play some thing thru apple Tv when most of the DVD players comes with builtin flash drive support which plays pretty much all formats ...

DVD players can't stream from your computer...at least that I know of.

And that's the point. I don't want to have to put files on a flash drive just to play it on my TV.

most DVD players do stream videos from your computer now ... i have a samsang c-6500 cost around $150 and i stream videos from my iMac ... and this functionality is pretty standard now ...

so that means if i dont need to stream thru Apple Tv there is no point in lawbreaking?

Lawbreaking? Jailbreaking was actually legalized in the US a couple months ago wasn't it? Can't get too mad about that.

But still OP, your original question is pointless, because it's like asking why do we jailbreak other iOS devices?

BTW, I personally do not jailbreak, but I have in the past on my original iPhone, and a little bit on my 3GS.

i want hulu, pandora, and other tv shows to be loaded on jailbreaked ATV so i can ditched my cable (u-verse sucks!)

and play angry birds on big screen :D

An article I read this morning on gizmodo pointed out some additional hurdles to getting apps to work on the :apple:TV. Another site said that while apps that utilize keyboard typing work (at least partially), touchscreen apps do not.
