Why me and what should i do with my imac?

Well i have just come over from PC after being tempted by my step father, a total man.

Ordered a 20" 2.4ghz imac from the refurb section in the UK. Got it delivered on Thursday, all be it to the wrong address, this was the couriers fault though. Ok so i get home from work and it will not remember the WPA for the router, i posted on here and got some good feedback, thanks!

Next morning that was sorted so spent several hours transfering info from PC to mac, photos, docs etc. Also installed Office and iworks. My PC is running USB1 so it takes a while to download to my USB pen. Anyway, the mac falls asleep and i go to wake it up, sounds like a bloody hair dryer with the fan for about 2 seconds then it settles, i have also noticed that this only happens when cold.

I call apple care and explained the problem as my step dads does not do this, essentially the guy on the end of the phone could not give a toss, he did not want serial number and said there was nothing he could do over the phone and i should take it to a apple store. OK so i phones apple store and book app with Genius, go up there 30miles away with imac in hand, wait for nearly 30mins, (why did i book an app again) i speak to the guy in shop, hi did not even want to listen to it and said call apple care and ask for a replacement. So essentially i had a waisted journey.

This is not good for someone that was expecting so much from moving across.

RANT OVER.......

Questions:
Is this fan noise normal, i have searched and found that others have had it but they do not state what they have done.

What should i do?

What happens about software i have installed that has licenses on it, Office and iwork if i decided to pursue a new imac?

Any help appreciate, i guess i am having a ruff time, i wanted it to be perfect after spending my hard earned cash.

My apologies for the lack of comments. It probably just means that people aren't sure how this should go down in the UK. Did you call Apple Care back and tell them that the Genius recommended replacement? That's your free ticket to a brand spankin' new computer. The only way to be sure you get an actual NEW machine is if a Genius says so. You've gotten that, so just call back Apple Care and tell them so. You should get a new machine!

TSD, thanks for the appologises appreciate it. I rest the SMC yesterday and it appears to have cured it, well it did yesterday. Finger crossed when i get home from work it will be OK to. Did not Phone Applecare yesterday, i tried on Saturday night but they were shut and it states they were open again on Monday.

Hey there,

I'm sorry for the bad experience.. I'm not sure how loud "bloody hair dryer" is, as each person has different oppinion on what noise is. But.. Just a theory here.. Maybe it starts with fans at full rpm, just in case, and then spins down again when it has verified good temperature? I see, that this goes against your comment on, that it only does it when it's cold.

If you haven't yet, you could try and do an Apple Hardware test. Insert your OS X dvd, restart, and hold down the D key.

EDIT: Not sure if Apple Hardware Test works with Leopard discs, but it works with Tiger disc.

Sorry about your bad experience FuriousD

One thought: when you use OSX for the first time, Spotlight creates its index. As you add photos, songs etc, Spotlight continues to churn away. This could explain the fan noise, though it does sound excessive. Once the index is created things will settle down.

Have a look at Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) for anything unusual.

Don't be fobbed off by Apple. Be polite but firm.

I'm off to the apple store tomorrow with my imac.
When I last went with my iPhone they couldn't have been any nicer. My mac is nearly two years old but have AppleCare until next April. If by chance they cannot fix my problem is it possible to get a brand new mac(well u can dream)

Got home last night and the fan was notciable when i turned it on for a couple of second and you could hear it a little, however when up to temp it was totally silent.

The fan speeds are the same for if cold or warm though. It will be a pain if i need to send back as it was a refurb and it came with a 500gb HD as apposed to a 320gb plus i have spend sveral hours transfering info from the PC to the mac.

I'm a big Apple guy these days after migrating over from PC in Jan of 2007. I have a white imac core 2 duo 17" screen. Never had a niggle with it at all. Had I been in your situation, I'm on the phone asking for a new rig ASAP. Do not accept sub-standard anything from anyone.

Also, now that all your stuff is on your imac, just burn it all onto a DVD or if you have a back up drive, go the time capsule route so you can load it all up quickly on your new imac whenever it arrives.

Just my two cents, but do not accept crap.

The fan should not be accelerated to max speed, unless it detects extreme heat. Does it sound like the jets on an airplane barreling down the runway? Not suppose to happen on "wake up".

When i wake my mac, i get more of a "wooosh" then it goes silent for normal applications.

fan temp sensor fault

My 20" iMac as a problem with the fan (well the temp sensor) and as such soon as more than one aplication is runnign it revs up. then runs consistent at 3000rpm despite normal tempatures.

I found out it was a hardware fault butr starting up in diagnositic mode and running the full hardware test, getting an error code then pestering apple care (a lot of work) to get them to look up the code they coudnt be bothered at first)

I havn't yet takne in to get it it fixed as i'll eb with out my much needed machine for two weeks.
