I have been using my new MacBook M1 Pro 14 for more than 2 weeks now and I've set optimised charging for my battery but my laptop keeps charging past 80%

I thought that my MacBook will learn from my schedule and not charge past 80% after a while... but that doesn't seem to be happening.

will this ruin my battery? I keep my power adapter plugged in everyday from morning to around 6 pm while keep the lid closed.

Well, if you never use it on battery, this will never work AFAIK. This would work if, as example, you work plugged until 2PM and then you use it unplugged. Mac will recognize the pattern and not charge the battery until like 1PM so at 2PM is fully charged and ready to be unplugged.

If you want to keep the battery permanently in 80% you can download AlDente, its an app that limits the charging until the value you want.

Give it more time to recognize your usage pattern. My 14" MBP took a month or so of no battery usage to finally recognize my usage pattern and stop charging at around 80%.

Took a couple weeks to kick in for me. Seems to vary a lot.

Also, it will reset and charge back to 100% if you unplug it for even a second.

I am almost always on power, and mine took about a month to figure it out. After that, one day this week I had it on battery for a long time, down to 37%. It went up to 100% for about 36 hours, then went back to 80%. That seems reasonable in trying to figure out my usage.
