Why Nearly Everyone Will Want an iPad2- ZDNet.

This article speaks of the criticism directed at Apple's iPad upgrade basically implying the upgrade is not a big deal. Personally I think the iPad must lose market share as the competition builds, but Apple is clearly in the lead with the number one tablet. And if you keep in mind some of the apps problems on an open platform, control does have it's advantages when you are in the sweet spot and can project what a huge number of customers want. Good reading.

“I don’t see this as heads above the competition, especially the Xoom, right now.

“This comes at a cost as some customers and developers bristle at the amount of control that Apple wields. From a developer perspective, Android is open-source and it’s easier to develop apps for Android devices. For hardware developers, it’s straightforward to build whatever device they want using Android. Look at the Xoom,” Hyers said.

But then the article picks apart the criticism:

"Not a Compelling Upgrade"
For the same price schedule, Apple is offering customers a device that’s a third thinner, and twice as fast, while still keeping the same strong 10-hour battery lives. Oh, and then there are the cameras, and mirrored video out. But this and more isn’t compelling enough.

Some say that the iPad 2 isn’t a “competition killer.”:
These analysts have it backwards — Apple isn’t the one that has to kill the wannabes. Rather, it’s up to the competition to come up with a truly compelling value, one that trumps the iPad.

My favorite quote although I admit it is an exaggeration:
Apple fanboys are the customer. If we’ve learned anything from the continuing sales of iPhone, iPod and iPad, everybody uses these products. It’s not the installed base of Mac users supporting iOS as it was in the first year of the original iPod’s release. It’s everybody now. Who isn’t a fan of some Apple product, other than the Gates household.

Interesting article. I shan't be getting an iPad 2 though. May get my gran one. She's got a grands worth of computer she doesn't know how to use.

The iPad needs to come a long way before I get one. I'll be using my computer until then.

I don't view the iPad as a MBP replacement. My wife wants one because when she travels she does not feel like lugging her computer with her. Her primary activity is surfing and email. Lately I've run into several business people who are using iPads as laptop replacements. They seemed happy with them. When I saw the guy on CNN walking around punching in stuff and having it appear on a big screen behind him I thought "Something is a foot". :)

Apart from developing i see no reason not to use a iPad instead of my desktop/laptop. It certainly looks more enjoyable to use than sitting with a laptop on my lap uncomfortably.

Hardware wise, this was a pretty nice upgrade, even though it did not include some items that were on many people's list... display upgrade and 1 GB RAM. Apart from that, lighter, thinner, strong processor upgrade... along with a probably jump from 256 to 512 in RAM. Pretty nice.

The real distinctions come from the software. iOS4 is being pushed by Android on some levels, and I expect iOS5 to bridge some of those gaps, but not to the satisfaction of everyone. Battery life, user experience, etc. will still overrule some things.

Sites that write articles like these, well they write for controversy more than for reporting. They have to distinguish themselves and compete for hits. I would trust my own experience with a device more than I would a list of what someone else says I should think about it.

I won't be getting one.

Like the first iPad, the iPad 2 looks great. I just don't have a need for one yet. :)

I don't think I'll ever have a need for them. My MacBook air is quite portable enough, my iPhone does the rest for when a laptop is too cumbersome.

+1. I want one bad just to have one but I have no need at all. MacBook air and iPhone does it all.

It is clearly not a device that fits everyone's work flow or needs
And that's ok :)

I really enjoy mine, and it is awesome for taking notes at work and for presentations to clients... among the other play things

True.

Open source doesn't make it easier for the majority of developers who will never go look at that source, nor have reason to.

For hardware developers, it’s straightforward to build whatever device they want using Android. Look at the Xoom,” Hyers said.

True.

I don't think I'll get one. It'd be great to have and I'll probably get one sometime in my life though :)

Right now I'd rather have a good Mac and a $1K cellphone.

I am getting an iPad 2 and this time I am using it to it's fullest potential.

All of my DSLR photos will go into the SD adapter and editing will be done first on the iPad. All presentations will be performed through HDMI using Keynote. I'll let you know how much time I spend on my MacBook Pro this year.

It'll be huge. We'll be seeing massive uptake of the iPad 2, as the competition will remain well behind Apple.

Interesting. And my apologies in advance if my next statement is not true. But you must not have an iPad. I have all but replaced my laptop with my iPad. Yes, It won't yet replace the need for a laptop until one can download flash player (my biggest frustration), but I disagree that there's lots that need to be done. Again, Apple has created a reactionary situation for their competitors - the need to rush a pad of their own to the market.

I find the user experience of my MBP too high to justify an iPad ... with the MBP sitting on the coffee table being so convenient ... the iPad cannot compete.

That's just the thing. When you OWN an iPad you find the portability to be ideal for couch and coffee table. You lament having to haul the MBP out of the office.
