I would say cost since they wanted a more affordable iPhone that a lot more people would buy with the X looks and features. The Xr hits the spot.

They already have plenty of 5.8 inch component inventory as well.

I'd like to know what the extra cost is for the 3D touch, the extra gig of ram, the oled, and the dual camera. Is the Xs the better deal?

Agree 100% - X/XS screen is too narrow, but MAX footprint is very large. The XR footprint/screen may be Goldilocks, but many would prefer it to have OLED and dual camera
