Is there an actual hardware difference between the new pro and the old one or is Apple doing this to encourage people to upgrade?

Wdym apple Pencil hover? M1 iPad Pro can charge apple pencil 2nd gen just fine. It’s the 10th gen iPad that cannot charge. Reason? No space for charging stripe.

Pencil Hover is the software feature where the screen will show you the cursor when the tip of the pencil is within a few millimeters above the surface of the display. It's only available for the M2 iPad Pros.

Oh that one.
Heh… I won’t lose my sleep missing that feature. If I happen to get M2 iPad Pro later, I might enjoy it, otherwise, it’s no big deal for me. Certainly not a reason to convince me to upgrade.

Most likely it's a h/w issue/feature - the iPad h/w has to be able to detect the pencil signals at a distance (up to 12mm).

Maybe we just need to wait for an interview with Craig just like back in the day for stage manager- “needs the power of M2 for sure”, then wait for the storm to brew, then we’ll get it on the other devices as well.

It's Photonic Engine, part 2.

If it were a hardware feature, you can bet Apple would have stated something in the press release.

It could be an added sensor. Almost certainly actually. It would be extremely unlikely that evil Apple is making people upgrade needlessly.

It's also a major feature. Without a media event, this is going down under the radar.

Having said all this, Apple's credibility gets a hit when they limit things like Stage Manager to M1, THEN change their minds lol.

Then again, this was a software thing, so no need to spend money.
