Maybe I missed the answer to this but why did the iPhone get multi-tasking and the iPad did not?
Why not add this simple function?

Cause people using iPads aren't capable of doing multiple things at the same time. :p

Multitasking "simple", LOL. You are obviously not a programmer  It's one of the more complex problems in software development, especially for mobile devices. Adding it is one thing, making it work well is another.

Well, it's not really multitasking so not quite the same.

It only really just freezes an app and allows you to switch to another app, then when you move back to the frozen app it restarts it where it was.

Which is handy, but not exactly multitasking like we had as far back as the Amiga with only a 8 Mhz cpu.

This isn't entirely true....

But still, it's cool to know there are still Amiga aficionados out there. I feel great nostalgia for the old BBS threads about the great Mac killer.

If Apple had owned Amiga and Commodore has owned the Mac. I think Apples history would have been a lot more exciting :)

To get the benefit of multitasking with the upcoming iOS 4, does that mean current iPad owners simply update their iOS to version 4 when its released, or do you have to buy the next generation iPad hardware? I have a feeling you have to buy the next generation iPad.

You are updating only the software so you don't need to buy the next generation iPad :)

Whew! Thanks. In reading the news about what may be offered in the next generation iPad hardware, looks to me that unless one wants a camera, gyroscope, etc., this first version should be fine for most people.

This isn't accurate. There is full, pre-emptive multitasking, but developers have to take advantage of it (with background tasks, for example).

It's true that apps don't just keep running in the background--but as has been pointed out in a variety of sources, this is a poor model for mobile devices with limited resources (including battery life).
