Why no new chat programs

I find it hard to believe no one has brought to the table another native chat program. With Apollo on hold and mobile chat pretty much dead, I figured by now someone would have gotten the source and continued the project...
Well that two more than Apple has offered up so far! I guess you have to realise these developers are basically doing this for free, so they do what they can. Imagine if they had a company behind them with hundereds of programmers helping out!
