Why no PiP for YouTube app?

Why is there still no picture in picture for the YouTube app? Are they not going to do it? Why not?

...and OF COURSE they updated their iOS app with no PIP support. Eff you YouTube.

I exclusively use Protube now as well, deleted YouTube. No ads, there's PIP, background audio, it lets you adjust the quality over cellular network, set a default playback quality, etc etc. I also prefer the design, the new UI for lollipop is awful imo, I like the look of lollipop in general, but hate that giant neon header that never goes away and I'm not a fan of the subscription lists. I only used it a couple times, though. Should've gave it more of a chance but PiP is way too enticing. Gonna miss the 60FPS support in YouTube but not that many people use it. Just looks nice for the occasional time it comes up. Is that something Protube can add in?

Google is more concerned about their ugly material design than a new feature of Apple's iOS.

They don't want to implement PIP since it will partially enable background playing of music through YouTube in which they try every method to stop.

And Protube just sports better streaming performance than Youtube, and supported Airplay mirroring at a time when Youtube inexplicably didn't. Money well spent.

Does Protube have landscape UI support on iPhone? That's one reason I like Youplayer but that app is rather glitchy.

Yes, Google is evil and incompetent and has the wrong priorities. That is clearly the only possible explanation. It definitely has nothing at all to do with PiP being a brand new feature that very few apps support. Google's track record of supporting new iOS features is quite good, but they are rarely there on day 1.

The Material Design appearance for YouTube has been in development for ages. A certain percentage of users—myself included—had it remotely enabled a couple months ago in the previous version, presumably as a test run.

Google has had access to the materials required to implement the feature since last June. It isn't brand new to developers.

I could see the name of the channels I subscribed but now there are only tiny round icons.

The video could play in the background (sound only of course) but it was disabled.

And special bonus - the big red wasted space at the top.

I didn't say Google is evil but sometimes they go backwards in software design and they never conform to iOS's system wide gestures and design language.

Google has hated background playback of Youtube on iOS for a very long time, in the past they tried to crackdown on 3rd party YT apps that still supported it during the window where it wasn't available natively because of a bug in iOS 6.1. PIP easily allows background playback hence why Google would be weary of supporting it in their official app.
Another little detail is that Google wants you to pay for background playback.

Youplayer is amazing. So much better organization of UI. But, you will lose some functionality with third-party YT clients. Mostly related to suggestions and subscribed playlists. It's the same situation as with Twitter - some APIs are off limits to 3rd party developers.
