I installed a Belkin USB 2 PCIe card(3 x USB, 2 x eSata) in a Mac Pro 2008 and did a speed test on various drives using Blackmagic speed test.

I noticed that I am getting 304MB/s write and 281MB/s read on the USB 2 connection of the Belkin card when connecting a portable SSD that has a USB 3 connection?

The firewire 800 port to a portable fw 800 2.5 sata HD (82MB/s), internal sata HD (53MB/s) in the Mac Pro, internal sata SSD (read 265MB/s/write 119MB/s) in the Mac Pro.

I thought USB2 connections are only 60MB/s or 480Gbps?

Does these results seem right and why am I getting very high results with the SSD connected to the Belkin USB 2.0 ports?

I mainly use the external SSD for music production and I was considering upgrading to a USB 3 pci-e card, but I am not sure whether it is necessary if I am getting these speeds with the Belkin card.

Are 300MB/s speeds sufficient for large amounts of audio tracks when using Logic X software?

Thank you.

I just checked and the Belkin card USB sockets have a blue plastic centre, but I don't understand how this card is USB 3.0 as I purchased it from a seller selling it as a USB 2.0 model. The Apple Systems Report does not show USB 3.0 devices written anywhere? I think you are right though, it seems like it is USB 3.0 so I guess I do not need to upgrade. I was always curious as to why it was rather fast for a USB 2 :)

In the USB tab, System Information.app should show USB devices with "Speed Up to 5 Gb/s".
USB 2.0 is more like "Up to 480 Mb/s"
