Oh boy... Hows Microsoft going to get around this one? Looks like they be screwed. Its not like they couldn't turn a nice profit from upgrades versions anyway.

No, the most awesome thing ever is that you never have to buy/use Windows Vista IF YOU HAVE A MAC!
Definitely against the EULA, although somewhat grey if you are just trying to preserve your XP license should you need to switch back.
As for the profit, MS has sunk many years of development time into Vista/Longhorn/... and as much as you think they turn a profit on the $100 upgrades, they need to sell the full versions as well to recoup the development costs. From a raw materials standpoint they could sell disks for less than $20 and make profit, but of course then they'd probably never recoup the last 5 years.
Not that it matters too much since most people are probably going to upgrade their PCs to get Vista anyway so it would be OEM from the PC manufacturer.
I wouldn't bother with it then.

I would probably end up doing this just due to the fact that Vista will invalidate my XP activation so if I wanted to downgrade after installing Vista, I'd be stuck buying another version of XP (in order to maintain legality).
You'd think that given this much time they'd have come up with a good foolproof way to create an "update" DVD/CD that can't be hacked to be a full install... which also tells me they just don't care....
This reminds me of one of the Office versions where the Upgrade CD could be pointed at itself as a valid product to upgrade from. Saved a lot of time and disk swapping on install.
If you don't care about being in compliance with the EULA then go download it for free.And why should we comply with the brainwashing EULA then?
I worked at CompUSA in the software department when I was in high school. Customers would come in looking at the full version of office which ran $529 if I recall correctly. I would quickly point them to the upgrade version which was about half that at $249. Not wanting to promote pirating and thus lose my job, I showed them the upgrade requirements which included MS Works. Works, displayed right next to Office, could be had for $49. So, I sold quite a few copies of Works in my time at CompUSA.
Microsoft Works...my favorite oxymoron.
I plan on grabbing a copy of Vista Ultimate OEM for my iMac once Leopard is released and has full Boot Camp support for Vista. Remember that Parallels only supports Ultimate!
I love OSX but since I am a computer science student, I'm trying to keep up with the times on all three platforms (OSX, Linux and Windows). I've got two Macs: iMac (OSX and XP), iBook (OSX and Ubuntu Linux) and then a server (Ubuntu Server). There's nothing wrong with having all three!

After reading the anandtech.com review of Vista and its performance versus XP, I think I'll wait a while. Its slower across the board (most likely due to non-optimized drivers). The biggest downer is they have too many versions to choose from. They try and jam you for $500 for the Ultimate and Home basic is pretty much useless for what you pay.
Just about every poll I see ( ie. finance.yahoo.com ) shows that about 70% are looking to skip the upgrade this year.
MS has tried to leverage too much on their users with this ridiculous licensing.

Of course that's almost the cost of the mac mini which already has the ultimate OS
