Why should keyboards be thin?

I'm not so sure thin isn't ergonomic. Consider the wrist pads used to elevate the hands during typing. With a thin keyboard, you don't need them. Also, I think the angle is more necessary when you've got an elevated keyboard, so that wrists are straight when typing.
Think about a laptop. Your wrists are at the same level as the keyboard.

Apple knows that people fall for pretty things. Everyone understands what sleek, svelte and sexy. Not many people understand Pixel Shaders, Ghz and Front side bus.
I love minimalist design.
I wish the iMac was a MBP with the screen turned around, only 1" thick. I wish the MacMini were less than 1.5" tall. I think the MacBook can be .8", and I wish the MBPs were thinner as well. And I used to think the name "MacBook Pro" was too long. I bought a 17" for college as my first mac because it is the best looking laptop on the market.
I think the ACDs are too fat as well. The 30" is hefty; it seems as if you could fit a computer inside it. They should be thin glass, and have a proportioned but less-deep stand in the same design as all current ACDs and iMacs. I can't wait for wireless power to eliminate the power cord, and for bluetooth technology to be 100% ubiquitous.
My desktop has nothing on it. I use shortcuts to open new windows and the apps folder. My dock has safari, mail, ichat, itunes, photoshop, and pages. I wish I could hide the finder icon because I do not use it. I'm looking forward to Leopard's dock because it takes half of the translucent background away. And I wish to play with the menubar transparency.
My menubar has wireless, the battery/charged icon with no percentages or times, and the analog clock. I wish the spotlight icon wasn't there. I wish the menubar would hide or become elegantly transparent when desktop is the active window.
Aesthetically, I'm not buying the keyboard because I wish the white underneath wasn't present, and that there was only a little "brick" big enough for the 2 usb ports and stabilization, and not go all the way across underneath. The new wireless keyboard is ugly IMO with the bald spot and thick, rounded, casing at the top. (And it isn't full).

I see no idea that we need a THIN keyboard.
What's Apple thinking?
Steve job answers this question 6:35 into the keynote speech. The thickness is a critical factor of keyboard ergonomics.
here's a thought
the biggest market with Macs has been aftermarket. with the new keyboards so slim and straightforward, i think it opens the door for 3rd party upgrades.
just think, custom keyboard holders, covers, supports, trays, peripheral hubs, etc. especially with the bluetooth version.
i'd like to see a matching video editing jog/shuttle (reference Contour Shuttle Pro)
the previous version was nice and shapely but didn't leave much room for customizing it.

They are very nice to type on.
Microsoft Natural keyboards were a nice gimmick from way back when!
They can't make the iMac a MBP, as it would then be far less reliable than it really should be, have limited hard drive capacity, get very hot, have no space for a proper LCD display, and generally be a nightmare. Although the iMac uses a laptop processor, it's otherwise a desktop machine in a very small box.
The ACDs are fat for a reason, so they can stick decent displays in them. If they made them the same thickness as a laptop display, they would have to have laptop LCDs, rather than the decent LCD panels they use at the moment (there is a BIG difference between them in terms of quality).
