I'm not trying to say the iPhone isn't worth the excitement, but seriously I have never heard of people getting in lines for 5 days for a pocket-sized device. It's madness! I want the iPhone as much as the next man, but really. Can someone please explain this to me?

becuase of the apple logo, and its the first product in that market segment from them. thats it. the phone isnt al that great, its more or less a regular phone (dumbphone) with a large touch screen. other threads have proven the iphone is not on par with smartphones/pda phones/some BBs becuase of its lack in functionality. however it is on par with regular phones.

well most regular phones, the razr even has 3G now, but no browser

It's not just a phone, its a way of life.:D

But in all seriousness, the phone itself combines so many gadgets into one sleek, convenient package that it really simplifies gadgetry.

It's not just a phone, it's a phone, and iPod, and a revolutionary internet device all-in-one. :p

It's a revolution in the way we communicate.
Just how the Wii was a revolution in the gaming world with its controller and internets, the iPhone is doing the same to the mobile phone market.
Non-watered down internet? Google maps wherever you go (granted there's no GPS...)? a phone that has a music player that isn't ridiculously terrible?
It's convergence of things we already know, use, and love.
Convergence: It's the wave of the future.
It's already being used for kitchen appliances.

No! This is Spartaaaaaaaa!!! Sorry (I had to).

I was talking to a friend about this... aside from just the gooey fans, this is a NEW platform, and despite what others might say... its OPEN. This is the type of flexible, Internet saavy device I've always wanted. Somewhere deep, I think a LOT of people have been disatisfied with styluses, and think that using tiny-weensy scrollbars on smartphones is asinine. One reporter at the MacWorld convention said it best on an interview with NPR. It wasn't simply giddy amazement that met the iPhone, for many it was a sense of relief from something they didn't quite realize was so much of a strain. I honestly feel that no matter WHO put this phone out, Apple label be DAMNED, I would buy it. That's what makes it so tough. All the people who don't "get it" often overlook the point that Apple has unified a whole new methodology to using a phone, and applied it consistantly across its entire interface. Because they're using OSX, and no doubt their cross-chip-compiling solution Xcode, it's likely very very easy for them to add powerful new application to the platform in a whole new way. Core Animation alone, is almost like building "Flash" into the OS itself, giving the user quick transitions and a much more visually robust way of interacting with their environment. Lack of a subsystem like Core Animation, is why browsers like Deepfish or Opera do "leap" zooming, as opposed to the iPhone's "animated" zooming. The use of multitouch in general is tough enough, but Apple has done a stellar job at demonstrating the huge benefits of "flicks" and "pinches" to the degree that others are already working hard to imitate (like the HTC Touch).

Well, yeah, I understand that, but you don't see people lining up for days for an Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg Poacher.
It just seems crazy to me.

Or maybe I'm the one who's crazy!

iPod integrated with my phone. I have dock connector in my car, so this will be very slick.

Ever tried to browse the internet with a PocketPC or Palm Pilot? Between the iPod and a replacement for a good portion of my Palm T|X's functionality (web, mail, notes, document viewing), $600 is a pretty fair price (5G iPod $299, Palm T|X $299).

AND - it's a phone.

with OS-X and an elegant, intuitive, work-of-art, user interface - which IS revolutionary in the cell/pda market.

edit: thanks Cleverboy for putting the "amazement" over this device into words.

Yes, but the egg and muffin toaster can't remind you to call your mother when it's her birthday, it can't keep you company with its glowing, beautiful touch-screen on lonely nights, will it ding to wake you up?

and you can order breakfast with it, too. Google maps, search, make reservations for croissants! It makes breakfast for you, essentially! :)

Haha yes, loving the Wii analogy.

How do people with this kind of opinion find their way to a Mac Rumor site? It's for obsessive-compulsive people!

We are a support group for people with near-illness levels of Mac obsession. The iPod was a game-changing, industry-upending, lifestyle-enhancing product, and the iPhone promises no less. Couple that with our collective Mac addictions, and you have a fully-whipped fury on your hands.

That's why.

Not everyone's gone crazy.

http://techoped.com/2007/06/07/the-iphone-is-great-for-everyone-else/

The honeymoon is over before the marriage. Oh, there'll be touch screen virgins who'll be excited for a while to come, but the love-at-first-sight has had time to cool for more mature heads.

The first rift in the lovefest was the WWDC no-SDK announcement.

Now too much time has passed without Apple or AT&T filling in essential gaps in knowledge.

This has given everyone time to start really thinking what it is they want from a converged device, and what they're willing to give up for a device that's weak in some critical areas.

I don't know who's behind the lack of information, but it reminds me of how all the networks took such a hit on their big shows this past year, by having long boring breaks between episodes. In hindsight, a huge mistake for them. For Apple, perhaps something similar.

Don't get me wrong. After working with touchscreen handhelds for so many years, some of it very iPhone-like, I'm the first to be glad of its high profile. And I love its style, for the most part. Just think Apple has goofed up, big time, especially with the network choice.

So a small percentage of online mac fanatics with "mature heads", who are no longer touchscreen virgins, are already tired of obsessing about a product because they don't have the real info to back it up. Sounds like Apple really goofed up.

Meanwhile, iPhone fever rages amongst the populus.

Why so much craze over... (insert any product)?

Well, it is called rabid consumerism and is a side effect of capitalism.

You see, in the modern consumer driven society the modern man is placed in a milieu that does not connect well with his true nature. Therefore most people have an emptiness inside them, a gaping hollow black hole at the core of their soul. In their desperation to achieve nirvana man seeks anything to fill out that hole, it could be love it could be food or it just might be a shiny new gadget. But just like a true black hole anything placed within it is sucked into the nothingness of its singularity and the hole just grows larger and its appetite with it.

Modern man continues all its life, stumbling on this false path of righteousness growing ever more desperate in its quest to fill out that hole. In the end broken and bruised they arrive at the conclusion of all roads on this false path to serenity, the sacred centre of half truths. They realise that there exists no gadget so shiny no love so blinding no relief so satisfying that it can finally close the gluttonous gaping maw at their centre.

As their world comes crumbling down around them they, for the first time, realise that their life has been wasted on the eternal winding, self connected road of lies. Once they come to the realisation that it now is too late, and they are too old to remedy their life long mistake, it sinks into their being like the strongest of poisons, they finally draw their last breath and expire with their hands stretched, clawing at the heavens that has eluded them during their entire existence.

The End

... but not me, I just hate my phone and I want the merger of a great phone and a great iPod to avoid carrying around two gadgets.

I enjoyed that lol.

Not necessarily. Going back to the Wii analogy, I was really excited about the Wii, I wanted one more than anything. But you didn't see me in line waiting for one. Just forget the fact it was a waste of time since each store was getting like 5 Wiis in a shipment, I was patient enough to wait until the craze died down a bit. I guess I really don't have any solid arguments as to why I think it's crazy, I just think it is.
