Personally, I'm a huge Apple fan. I have the MacBook, an iBook, iPod, and I'll soon be buying the Apple TV. I just don't see the attraction to the iPhone. I've watched demos, guides etc. What's so great about it other than that you can touch the screen?

I have a T-Mobile Sidekick 3. It has a decent camera, the "actual" web, AOL Instant Messenger, Microsoft Messenger, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Email, games, and MP3 player, copying and pasting, a memory card slot, and all the other things you would expect from a Sidekick.

Furthermore, it has an ACTUAL keyboard and all of your data (contacts, notes, to-do etc.) is saved on an internet server.

My bill is $60 a month. And with that, I get UNLIMITED texting, web, email, IM, etc. I get 300 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited calling to the five people of my choice?

So, why is the iPhone so great? What technological breakthroughs has it made? Why do you all want one?

The reason I want one is because what it packs in one device. It is a phone that is also an iPod which can hold anything that comes from iTunes. Then another point for me is that it has actual Safari on it so its not like i'm just reading jumbled text when i'm looking at a webpage. Being able to have full e-mail with all images and being able to just touch a number or link and call it or open it. I love the visual voicemail feature so that I can choose what message I want to listen to in the order I choose. All of the widgets, watching YouTube, and having photo's viewed whichever way you want. I love the landscape feature. So.. overall, because it packs so many things all in one, I am in love with it.

For me it is Apple's ability to design a decent interface which will allow me to easily access and use the full functions of the phone.

The iPhone is great because it is the next evolutionary step in hand-held computing. Once you are done with your sidekick and buy the iPhone, which you will maybe not soon but later, you will realize just what a difference it will make in productivity, communication and entertainment. All the reviews so far have been very very favorable. That wouldn't have happened if the iPhone was not a capable handheld device.

Well to start with:
2mp camera versus 1.3mp on the sidekick
no wifi on the sidekick
web 2.0 apps on the iphone
visual voicemail
google maps
and the iphone is just so sexy both the hardware and software. (the sidekick is fugly IMHO)

well i just googled the sidekick phone you mention; it's hideous and geeky looking. whereas iphone is beautifully designed.

Take everything you said and replace iPhone with OSX and sidekick with Vista. Then you have your answer.
