Because of USB-C
Lol, Apple did not innovate or create the magsafe tech. It was created by a Chinese company that made Rice makers with "magsafe" style power supply.RIP Magsafe. You'll be missed. My favorite Apple innovation of the last two decades. It's saved me thousands of dollars in laptop damage.

I honestly don't think i'll be updating my 2008 MBP on this iteration either. Nothing WOW about this new model for me, lots of removed ports I have devices for, no mag safe, and honestly at that price.. wow, and that's the base 15" model. ouch.
I can attest to this. I am almost on my third charger in 4.5 years. lolExactly. Why have two different ways to charge your device?
Another reason I am happy to see Magsafe go is the chargers and cable ends broke a lot.

Make sure Griffin verifies it is compatible, because their specs say it has a peak power of 60W, but the new MacBook Pro charger is 87W I think (maybe just the 15").That's about the same rate I've been replacing chargers. In that time, it's saved my computer once. Small price to pay.
When I get my new MBP, I'm definitely getting one of these:
