Anyone have any idea why Apple wont release Apps for AppleTV. It would be great for us consumers, and a new revenue stream for Apple.

The 3gen AppleTV could have had some real great apps.

If you mean apps like Netflix, Vimeo, then I'm sure they will add more over time.

If you mean open it up to any 3rd party apps - I think the problem may be how to implement user-input well. The remote control isn't great for scrolling long lists, and for any more complex UIs it's very awkward. Even the Remote app isn't great - fine for gestures but not if you have to look away from the TV to look a the iPad/iPhone for on-screen buttons.

A TV will require a tailored interface for watching from 10 ft away which means that significant work would have to happen to prepare artwork and make a nice programming model.

Apple would not launch apps on the Apple TV by just trying to replicated what developers have on iOS.

Storage seen to be the issue, Apple doesn't want anything (that includes app and their data) on the device, they want it on the cloud, so until they have figure out the infrastructure for it, they won't release them. (this is a pure guess based on my conversations with Apples Engineers at WWDC, Apple campus and Dev forums)

I really think they will, eventually. It's just a matter of time. And, we'll have to see what happens with the possible Apple television... perhaps they will update the apple TV when they release the apple television itself...?

there was an apple tv dev release this year wasn't there? which means they will be opening it up for 3rd party apps. I think this is a must if google tv comes out.

Thats what I meant :) I just assumed you guys would understand what i was thinking since everything is in beta at the minute. Its the dev release sdk beta for apple tv

It is NOT an SDK..it just a beta of the firmware

Rumor on the floor was that some "VERY PREMIUM" developers got their hands on one, but not body really knows, us, regulars developers got a smile and a hug.

So we can interpret this as we will get 3rd party apps with ios 6 ?

Opening it up to apps is the next logical move. It really completes their ecosystem and brings it full circle - computer, phone / tablet, and TV.

I am slightly nervous that airplay is their end game, but it my experience, its just not good enough.

Anyway, REALLY hoping they bring it at the fall event.

I have a roku which is brimming with great apps called channels. BUT i havent used it once since my main tv has a jailbroken atv. You dont need apps if you jb your atv. Nothing compares. I have an atv2 not jailbroken but will be when i get a chance attached to the master bedroom tv and a completely jailnroken atv2 never opened still in the box that might sell.

It's coming. Steve Jobs was open about it years ago. They've just been busy with other products that sell in much more volume.

i'm sure that it will happen at some point. when? who knows. whey they think its ready really. i can see the benefit of it, but i think they might want to build an Apple TV with bluetooth first. honestly how else are you going to play games besides with an iPhone then?
