Why doesn't Apple let you customize the theme, status bar icons, etc. of the iPhone/iPod touch? Is there any specific reason for that?... b/c if Apple did that, it would make many, many people happy...

But at least we can have wallpaper in OSX.

I love the screen shot that came with my Snow Leopard update, but have it changed now to a family photo.

You can change the wallpaper on the iPhone, it is what shows before you unlock the phone and also behind the controls when on a call

If you have an image under your icons it gets messy and hard to see, I’ve tried it with an old jailbroken one a couple years ago and have seen a few people do it since then

A lot of the customization is an “i do it because I can” thing. Very, very rarely does it turn out well. Look at myspace vs facebook for a perfect example of this.

Exactly!

I looked at Android's OS, and it looks horrible with its wallpaper under the apps (looks very hard to read, Windows 95ish).

Yes, Apple does limit choices but that's their M.O. - their UI is always better than competitors and they know it works. And it was a great point to show MySpace vs. Facebook in regards to customization. Boundaries are sometimes necessary to preserve the 'Apple Experience'.

Yes, wallpaper under apps can make it hard to see. You definitely have to pick the wallpaper carefully in my opinion. But it would be nice to have the choice.

I’d much rather have the option to have custom SMS and email alert sounds. When a couple people with iPhones are around I find myself constantly asking “was that you?” when an alert goes off

I still don't understand the reasoning for not allowing us to choose a custom SMS or email tone. It's pretty pathetic really.

As for the wallpaper I think it's a good thing. With the icons you wouldn't be able to see the image anyway. Hell, my last WinMo phone came with a default wallpaper that made it damn difficult to see.

Count me in for wanting the ability to customize SMS tones. It'd just be nice, that's all.

Saying their UI is better is a matter of opinion. IMO, the UI is very outdated with no customization options. dumbphones have the ability to customize, as well as Blackberrys, Android phones, and Symbian phones. Customization is a big selling point for people buying electronics. People have been giving up the so-called "Apple Experience" because they're tired of living within the boundaries and protocols of what Apple thinks is 'better' for them, leaving you- the consumer just another pawn for Apple. Just my opinion. Ask why things are certain ways, rather then trying to defend and say "it's this way because.."

Same here. In reality you ought to be able to customize all of the sounds for the iPhone - i.e. alarms, rings, SMS, email, etc. On the other hand most people probably don't care enough to warrant Apple spending the time to implement it, but I would certainly appreciate it, and I'm sure a few other people would as well.

BUT but... that's not the Apple way.. it would take away from the ":apple: experience.."

This. I have rotating wallpapers because I dig 'em and know exactly where all of my icons are so crisp visibility isn't an issue, but it can be hard to use for someone else who's using my phone for the first time.

This is the exact reason I am thinking of walking away from the iPhones. I hate not being able to customize and no I don't want to have to jailbreak just to do something other phones allow. Apple needs to pick up their game and allow people to customize not only wallpapers but SMS and email sounds. Why not? What do they have to lose? If people really want they can they can stick with the default.

And Microsoft isn't? You have to download some stupid add-on to Windows in order to theme other than basic colors (e.g. using Windows Blinds)...

The fact is, its there meaning you can customize. Apple you have to hack it cause they are so precious about keeping everything how they like it.

stop complaining :)

just jailbreak the phone it takes like 15 minutes and you can do more than just customize the phone afterwards

I can do more with a jailbroken iPhone than with any other phone on the market today

Cause Apple doesn't want ugly iPhone's like this floating around... but unfortunately, they do.

Wow! Anyway, like many people have said Apple is in my mind a company that won't eer please me. A company that is this focused on looks over function to this extent is a company I will never but from (once I get rid of my iPhone). They should offer people who want it choice and for
those who don't (most people) leave it. But that's what jailbreaking is for...

Um, wouldn't the option to skin be purely looks, no function?

Because they know no one would pay $9.99 for an iPhone skin from the app store.

Actually, thats not a bad idea.
