Why won't my site show in Google!

Getting incredibly frustrated recently, mainly because of the fact a site I am building for a friend will not show anywhere in Google, and even offers an alternative spelling!

My site is www.barrysguitartuition.co.uk.

I've included all the meta tags possible, and the site validates under XHTML Strict. I have an XML site map too!

I've been using Google Webmaster Tools, and it says that "Indexing can take time". I submitted the URL a good week ago now. I really need to know how long this will take!

Has anyone had any experience with SEO. I'm relatively new to website building and this is an area I've never really looked into.

1 week is nothing in the SEO world. The fastest way to get your site spidered is get inbound links from other popular sites. As a matter of fact, posting it here was probably a good idea.

Agreed, a week is nothing, wait a good month before you start worrying.
 
hehe I guess I'll be back next week :) thanks for reassuring me I'm not doing anything wrong! - I've been seeing a LOT of badly marked up sites doing fine, very frustrating!
 
Yeah, it takes time.

But there's still more you should do. I think you ought to give more information about your location on the site. If I'm searching the web for a guitar teacher, I would search "guitar lessons charlotte nc"

I don't know where st. helens is, but I would at least include the country (England?) and the region/state/province/whatever they call it in England.

Also, your rates are unclear: 3£ for what? A lesson? An hour? A month? Seems almost insanely cheap, unless the lessons are 5 minutes long.
 
Ahh...build it and they will come....not.

A few things;

Content is king.....your content is very sparse.

A great design keeps your audiance interested.....you have 10 seconds or less to intice your intended audiance to stay. With your site I wanted to leave in 3 sec....very uninspiring.

Balance content with design.....harmony between the two disiplines.

Keywords.....what are yours? I only see a few. Place much more in your copy. Do not know what keywords to use....try Google and Yahoo keyword search tools. Find what works for your business.

SEO... your first goal is to place page one locally. That means doing a search for "guitar lessons my town usa". This should be very easy and takes very short amount of time to establish. Then expand outwards which may take awhile depending on your competition.

Every thing you do, write and wear put your website url on it. Gorrilla marketing 101. Thats how you get links.

Your first page has to have a call to action. What is yours? Your in it to make money, not to tell me that you have a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked. You can tell me that when I call you or put it in you references.

You are selling lessons, so sell me a lesson!

Thats the short list. The rest you have to study up on and allow time.

Oh and change your title. I do not want Barry the guitar teacher. That does not sell or place your product. I want professional guitar lessons my town usa. Your title is the most important Google search placement element.

Now send me a check for $1000. Only kidding. Good luck. Work on your site more, you are an artist ( musician ) you can be more creative than that.

thanks for all that help! Its actually just a small project for me - my friend is the teacher :) He really hasn't provided me much in the way of content, I think he just wanted a prescence on the internet.

I've taken all you've mentioned on board. Thanks a lot.
 
Basically, it can take as long as 6 months before it is fully indexed, and yes, this post on MacRumors will definitely help.
 
Be patient and good things will come to you.

While you wait though, you should be trying to drive traffic to your website in the ways mentioned by previous posters.

I am experiencing the same issue right now with my new site:

And it's been more than a week since I submitted to Google. However I was wondering;

Does everyone submits their sites to Google manually?

Is this really needed or is it just to speed up the process?

And how is that about taking up to 6 months for full indexing, where did you get that piece of information?

Finally, I remembered about a year ago a created a blog in Blogger and submitted to Google and it was showing up in results in about a week or so.

Funny thing when I removed it (deleted) it disappeared almost instantaneously from Google results!
