Why wont this play???

Ok, here is a ripped movie which wont copy to my iPhone for some reason....Can someone pinpoint out why it wont?? Thanks-

Kind- MPEG 4 Video File
Bit Rate- 127 kbps
Profile- Low Complexity
Channels- Stereo
Total Bit Rate- 640 kbps
Dimensions- 480x272
Video Codec- H.264

Anything????

Sobe: I was having problems as well, so I used Visual Hub to convert the movies. Visual Hub has a setting specifically for the iPhone. As to the source of the problem, my guess would be the size of the file in terms of pixels. My intuition is that anything not 320x240 is going to cause issues. The H.264 isn't an issue as that is what I've been converting the videos to and besides that is the format of the You Tube clips that that the phone can play.

tassle: Any more info on the problem? An iTunes product should work on the iPhone with no problems.

I'm hardly an expert, but I noticed that when converting my files to H.264 iTunes wouldn't even recongnize them at all...never imported them.

I then tried mp4 and it worked fine. This is using TivotoGo Plus.

I use Handbrake to convert some of my DVD's. I use the iPod setting and adjust the bitrate to something lower. I haven't had an issue yet (well other than Madagascar being ARcOS'ed). 720x270 ish is the resolution it usually chooses to keep the AR.

Well H.264 is the codec you should be able to encode H.264 and put it in a mp4 container. The iPhone (and iTunes) should play it as long as the bitrate and the dimesions are adhered to.

yeah they're just labels to me. I don't know the science behind it.

All I know is I have 2 options in tivotogo plus: H.264 or mp4. And for whatever reason, iTunes wouldn't recognize the H.264 setting.

what is the extension (.xxx) of the H.264 encoding? I would think that both should end up as .mp4's or maybe even .mov. Hmm, I wonder if H.264 is the Complex profile...

It's all about the encoder profile. I suggest that you use Mediafork. When you use h.264, make sure you use the iPod baseline profile, and dont let your average bitrate go above 1600. These were the best settings for me for h.264. I've ripped many files that didn't play on my iPhone, only to realize they didn't work 'cause i used the wrong profile. Hope this helps

MediaFork has been reintegrated into the HandBrake project. I'd use the latest beta as they added some pretty nice features.

Yeah I forgot about that, I just got so used to thinking that the Handbrake project was a lost 'cause Mediafork came out. Now they revived Handbrake. Thanks for the correction
