When I place my hands over the vents, it either turns on or off the backlight. Why? If the backlight is off, it turns it on (not fully but close) and if it's on this usually causes it to come on, albeit dimly. This only works in dim light (where it changes between off and on depending on the angle it's at). Just curious.

It's because the ambient light sensors are located within the speaker grill. You put your hands over it in light and it senses darkness, turning on the backlight. Cover it when it's dim, and it thinks it's even darker, turning the backlight up even higher.
