Hi

I have a 2014 MacBook pro 15"

recently when I try connecting to a network other than my own at home I can't get internet access..... If I connect to my home broadband it is fine (I have my router split to 2.4ghz and 5ghz and also a range extender for the same 2 networks. I can connect to all 4 of these fine.

But, if I try and connect to any other network I can't access the internet, I am currently connected to a local free wifi and I have an IP address, The DNS is set as 192.168.1.1 which I presume is correct and the router for the wifi. I have also connected to my phone via hotspot and I get a different IP address. So this seems to be working.

I cannot figure out why I can't access the internet via these networks but it all works fine at home.

For the record I cannot connect at my parents either on their WIFI I have the same problem.

Any one have any ideas? I am sure it is something simple I just can't figure it out!

Running high sierra 10.13.6

Thanks

Danny

system preference>network>wifi>ask to join network_should be checked
play around with the wifi section of that presence.
and check your firewall setting as well.

hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I have checked this and both the automatically join this network and ask to join new networks are ticked. The NHS WiFi network should pop up asking me to sign in when I connect to it but it isn't doing that either :(

OHHHHH
preference>wifi>advanced>proxies>unselect: auto proxy discovery
2014 maverick gave me and safari fits trying to log into the public library.

None of the protocols in proxies are selected. The only one on the proxy page selected is "use passive FTP mode"

what gets me is there are 50 techie people here who can pinpoint this and type a solution is 4 words.

I'm just trying to remember how i got around this years ago.
there is some setting that is blocking other incoming wifi connections
i guess turn off wifi and go away from your and turn back on when trying to use say the library's wifi

Maybe the location settings? Try creating a new location and set everything to DHCP to ensure you are getting settings from the router.

Another testing option -- for your parents' house -- would be to go over there with an ethernet cable and see what happens when you make a direct connection to their router. Unfortunately, you might have to locate a dongle to make the wired connection.

If you can get on and out, then at least you know that it's the wifi itself that's causing trouble.

its there a splash screen for terms and conditions that's not popping up? sometimes public networks need you agree to some liabilities.

Thanks unfortunately I've got one of the maxbooks without an ethernet port!

For not much money, you can try a USB/ethernet adapter.
If you can't get wifi going otherwise, it may be a "workaround".
Clunky -- perhaps -- but at least you'll be able to get online.
