My iMac is connected to my router (Time Capsule) via ethernet cable.

Is there any reason for me to keep the iMac Wi-Fi turned on?

Does it make any difference to the performance of my Wi-Fi by keeping it turned on or off?

Thanks.

The question is do you know which one your Computer is actually using. Take a look at network preferences and ensure Ethernet is the one in use and then switch off the WIFI if you are not using it.

It is not making any difference to the performance of your Wifi network.

It's using Ethernet and Wi-Fi so I'll turn the latter off.

Thanks for your help and quick reply.

If you turn off wifi, you will lose location services in apps like Maps. I have my iMac connected to my Time Capsule via ethernet, but leave wifi turned on. I set the service order in network preferences to have ethernet at the top. That way, it uses the ethernet as the primary interface.

I get that Wi-Fi geolocation is faster and less battery intensive than GPS, etc, but if it's leaving the Wi-Fi on all the time and constantly scanning, I wonder if that negates some of the battery savings (and what's the point of the checkbox for that option when I could just simply leave Wi-Fi on?). I wish it was better explained as to how that mechanism works. I suppose I could do a test with it off and on. I just lack the time for that sort of thing these days.

Apart from what people mentioned above me I'm pretty sure certain features such as continity, handoff, air drop etc will not work with the wifi or Bluetooth turned off.
