I can't believe there still isn't a compact zoom digicam that starts at 24mm equiv.

I got a small film Pentax a couple of years ago precisely because of this. There's still no digicam out there that can replace it.

I can live with a minimum focal length of 28mm. That still rules out 99% of the models on the market, which is a shame. On the SLR side I wish Nikon had a 24-70mm f/2.8 with VR. Canon already does, sans IS.

the Coolpix 8800 has 18mm. I don't know how to convert to 35mm equivalent, though. (how do you do that?)

You have to know the crop/magnification factor. If you know the sensor size, you can compute it as the ratio of the 35mm film diagonal to the sensor diagonal.

dpreview.com shows the minimum focal length of this camera as 35mm (equiv).

Well, when I used it, it sure pulled in more than a 35mm lens. I don't think that's accurate.

It says 35mm everywhere on the net, even in the shops, so this info must come from Nikon.

BTW, the native focal length is 8.9mm and it uses a "2/3 inch" sensor (8.8mm w x 6.6mm h, 11mm diagonal).
