Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-105mm

I want a "street" lens, so to speak and I was wondering if this is a good deal, or if it's just a waste of my money. I found a Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 EF USM Autofocus Lens at the B&H used store for $149. If I'm correct, which I think I am, it's compatible with my Canon Rebel XS, right?

Also, do you think it's a good lens?

It's not necessarily very wide on a cropped sensor like the one in your camera and mine, and doesn't have high quality glass. This is my opinion, however.

The problem with buying cheap glass is that you will spend a lot more cash buying a few of such lenses, than just taking your time to save enough cash to buy one good lens. For example, I have three or four cheap lenses (one around $100.00, another Canon lens around $250.00, and a Sigma around $350.00). The mm range is from 17mm to 300mm. If I would have taken my time, I could have purchased a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM instead. This one has high quality L glass, and costs around $600.00.

it's a decent lens, but it's not a wide-telephoto lens on your camera, it's a standard-telephoto.

I would stick with the 18-55 IS you probably have right now. eventually you can choose between the Tamron 17-50, Sigma 17-70 or 17-50, and Canon 15-85 or Canon 17-55.

I agree with most of the suggestions here. I've got the 24-105L and it's awesome, but out of your price range. The 15-85mm looks pretty good so does the 18-135mm if you want more reach.

The 17-85mm is better than the kit lens and the 28-105mm, might be worth a look.
