Widescreen LCD advice

Hey guys, I have a white macbook along with the apple bluetooth keyboard and BT mighty mouse. I want a widecreen monitor but can't decide whether if it's worth getting the apple 20" display over the dell 20". I really like the look of the ACD and it would match my all-apple setup but I really am having difficulty justifying the extra cost... especially since I may get an xbox 360 down the track which I may want to play on it (admittedly I can also use my big CRT tv or plasma when I get it in about 6 months time).

Anyone else made a similiar decision lately?

I was gona get a Samsung 205BW for m white MacBook and Xbox 360. It's extremely cheap, looks so cool, and has a very good quality. Talk to the member brikeh, he has one, and uses it with his 12" PB. The only reason I didn't buy it was, my father though I already spent too much money on MacBook... Just search for it on Google. Samsung 205BW.

Thanks for the help, I've looked into this monitor and it looks quite good, however if I was going for a non-apple lcd I think I'll still stick with the Dell.

BTW: the hack referred to in my sig. is just the screen spanning hack for my ibook. People tend to ask me that question a lot in PMs.

OUCH!!! Well you never know....I saw a refreshed (returned for some reason and inspected at the apple store) by 20" apple cinema display at the apple store, still with warranty as if purchased brand new, for $599. I thought it was a good price.

The Apple screens are overpriced. If you want to spend more money then buy a 24" dell otherwise just go for the 2007, you can hook up your xbox 360 to it np.

The samsung 204bw is quite good too, I don't like the name Dell , but the 2007 really is a great screen!

Yeah but Apple displays look a whole lot better.....I have yet to hear anyone deny that...

hmm, i dunno. The Dell screens are actually brighter.

I got my 2007WFP when it was on sale like a month ago. It was selling for like $360. Excellent deal.

Oh, I agree....I'm not rolling around in money trying to figure out how to spend it....but if I can afford a better looking monitor for a little more money than I will, but it's up to the individual buyer.

Dell 24" is around 750 or so
Apple 23" is around 1200

I could do a lot with that extra 450 but I would rather have the Apple....

It's not often that you actually notice the casing of the monitor when the monitor is being used. Especially at night. The Dell monitors are black on the framing which makes it almost impossible to notice. I kind of like this. The rest of it is pretty much the same exact color of the high end apple products, the brushed silvery alluminum look.

Even if the Dell's casing was crap, I still wouldn't spend that much money for an ACD's enclosure.

BTW, I'd still say you should take the Samsung 205BW, so much nicer design than the Smell, and also cheaper...

I have a G5 PowerMac, Xbox 360 and Acer AL1916w.

I use the DVI for the PowerMac, the VGA for the 360 and both of them work fine. The monitor is a 19", so it has less space (1440 x 900) but is verrrrrrrrrrrrrry cheap.

Apple Display Cinema? I'm pretty sure it's Apple Cinema Display (ACD). ADC is Apple Display Connector used for earlier revisions of Studio/Cinema displays.

BTW, the Samsung 205BW has DVI and VGA, so you could use DVI for the MB, and VGA for the 360...

Heck I pretty sure most monitor convert the anlog signal to Digital to put it on screen. Or have to in some way.

Also I can give you a example of stuff a lot of us use every day that goes from Anlog to digital all the time. Cable internet. It goes along an anlog line and then converted to a digital signal for our computers to use.

Also it not that hard to convert bettween the 2. Mind you it is easy to go from digital to anolog than the other way around but it not that hard to flip it back an forth. Everything eletronic we use runs on just 1 and 0s including our brains oddly enough.

No, you don't get it. The ACD's only accept a digital DVI-D input, while the Xbox only suuports VGA out, and of course Scart, HDMI etc...

If you love the looks of the Apple Cinema Display and understand the fact it has a single DVI-D input, then go for that, if you're prepared to pay the extra for it.

If you're not quite so fussed about the looks, the Dell is a great buy and it has the benefit of having multiple inputs and is a bit cheaper.

Ultimately it's whether you are prepared to pay for Apple's design, both are good quality displays regardless.


Regarding the DVI Connector, the Apple Cinema Display is DVI-Digital only. (wikipedia link here) There are two other formats, DVI-Analogue and DVI-I (Digital + Analogue), the DVI-D connector of the ACD means the display will not convert an analogue signal to digital, so without a Analogue->Digital converter, the XBox 360 is a definite no-no

No offense??? I wouldn't call it ignorance I would call it misunderstanding....but if you want to call me ignorant you can....I have always thought the monitors were ADC's ( I never related that to Apple Cinema Display) because when I bought my 22" cinema display they said something about adc (just found out means Apple Display Connector). My fault for not understanding.....Thanks for correcting me.

The dell is $703 while the apple costs $1300, almost double the price, for a better design (I don't think the dell is ugly though, just not as good looking as the apple), while the dell is better/has more inputs.
If I had the money to burn on a 23 ACD I would either go further up and buy a 30" acd or dell. I like the design but it's not really better and for me at the moment I don't have that much money that I don't care about $600 more or less. But it's up to you how much you want to spend on the exterior part.

Josias, I'm not sure whether you meant there are no specific Xbox 360 Analogue->Digital Converters, or whether you meant that there is no such thing as an Analogue-> Digital Converter in general.

If it's the latter, check out this

Regarding the Xbox 360 connecting to an Apple Cinema Display, there seem to be a number of solutions available including this one. I don't know how good it is, but clearly it's technically possible.
