Widescreen Video on Mini-DVI?

I can not for the life of me get widescreen avi's to play in widescreen on my macbook which is widescreen or on my widescreen tv through the mini DVI output.....

Its there some setting or something for it to work with quicktime so i can use front row.

Are you talking about the box of video, or the black stuff above and under it. If you're talking about the latter, remember that all Apple displays are 16:10, not 16:9. FrontRow, I believe, will not work with an external monitor unless the computer is in lid closed mode.

front row works just fine but i hate watching widescreen movies in letterbox on a widescreen display/TV so is there a solution? i didnt know that it was 16:10 that explains the slight space on the edge of the screen....

There are a number of aspect-ratios that are "widescreen". 1.6:1 (16x10), 1.78:1 (16x9), 1.85:1, 2.35:1 (and probably others). What is the aspect-ratio of your AVIs?

Well, 720x480 is actually 1.5:1. They would have to be 720x404 to be 16x9 (1.78:1).

And what program are you using to play these AVIs? Also, what MacBook do you have and what is its native resolution?

From what I gather, the OP is trying to get widescreen video out of the video adapter.

So, essentially, is there a way to get 480i 16:9 out of the video adapter?

ok im gonna try and explain the very best i can:

I have a file 720x480 that has a black bar on top and bottom, i want to use quicktime so i can use front row but i have tried vlc too. The movie is shown on my widescreen macbook with the black bar on top and bottom. My resolution currently is 1280x800 but i have tried many other resolutions. My TV does a fine job displaying my screen through the mini-DVI port but the problem lies that since the movie is not filling the entire screen on my laptop it is not filling the screen on my TV. So I need to find a way to either convert or some setting or way to make the 720x480 video play without the black bars on top and bottom in quicktime. Here is a screenshot for refrence....

Sounds like the bars are part of your video and not being output by your player. If this is the case, then there's probably nothing you can do about it unless you can find a player that will automatically clip out the bars and scale the video to the screen. I can't think of any players that would allow you to do this either, although I don't think it would be too hard to do from a programming standpoint so I don't see why this feature wouldn't be implemented in some player or another.

Looks like 2.35:1 to me so the bars need to be there to preserve the aspect ratio.

It also look like it was encoded from a dvd without cropping, so the bars are permenently in the video (otherwise you could stetch is and watch it in the wrong ratio making eveything tall and thin).
