I’m using widgets like Reeder 5 and TV Forecast (two popular apps that offers this kind of feature on iOS 14). But in both cases the widgets don’t get updates automatically. I have to open the apps to see the new RSS feeds on Reeder and the new episodes on TV Forecast. This make the widgets useless.

It doesn’t work only for me, or it’s a common thing in iOS 14?

Widget refreshes can be anywhere from minutes to hours. Developers do not have a lot of control of when it happens. It’s unfortunate.

Since the initial beta of 14, we have noticed a serious issue with widget refresh. Not sure of the change in iOS that is driving this, but like @Paco II mentioned, devs have little control over it at this point. Hopefully we get timely refreshes back. I know it has killed my RSS / Stock Widgets.

Thanks for the replies. I hope that Apple change this with a setting like “Refresh widgets in background” as it works with apps

Weirdly, although they started off rubbish, my Stock widgets have been ok recently. I've put them on the Today View screen, or whatever it's now called, and they appear to update each time I swipe to it.

I think continually clicking on the widgets and opening the underlying app eventually teaches the OS that you care about the data and it starts to update more often. Or that could be a complete coincidence :)

It would be cool if it could learn or as @PEVO mentioned we get a “background” option.
