Are there any rules when it comes to the placement of widgets? It seems like depending on the size of the widget, iPadOS doesn't allow me to place it in an area where the app icons are.

Also, when I get the layout just right in portrait position, it looks very weird in landscape position. The widgets and icons get moved around. So what do I need to keep in mind?

You should be able to place widgets anywhere near or next to apps in any order. I keep my widgets in the Today View (swipe left to right), as I think mixing apps with widgets looks messy and disorganized on the Home Screen.

I think what you're seeing with icons changing location between portrait and landscape is just repositioning to fit them properly in the display field of whichever mode you chose.

I don't understand. Can you post a screenshot?

I'm can try. But just hold your finger down on any blank area on the Home Screen until all apps and widgets wiggle. Then with your finger press any of them and move them around to where you want them. Then press any blank area again to end the process.

I know how to add widgets, but like I said, just when I get the layout to my liking in portrait mode, it looks really bad in landscape mode. It makes me wonder if some layouts just work better in one position rather than both as the OS has to shift them to get it to fit in the screen.

Set the widgets how you want them in one orientation. Done. Go into the other orientation, move the widgets to position them how you want in that orientation. Done. It should remember for each orientation.
