Why is this not a thing, yet?
iOS supports widgets on the home screen since last year's version.
I feel like the only innovation Desktop has seen in years is 'stacks'. It's this huge unused space. It's easily accessible with a convenient gesture too, but it offers zero functionality. Widgets are supposed to offer small bits information 'at a glance'. Desktop is the perfect spot for this. Throw windows to the side, get a glance at the widget on Desktop, throw windows back in.
Sidebar on the other hand has a complicated gesture and no visual button anymore (you click on time to open it ...). I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people don't even know it exists.
