Widgets on the iPhone

Just got my iPhone yesterday and i love it!
To save us time, I am a pretty savvy mac user

Ok i did a search and found nothing on these forums so forgive me if its a repost.

I am curious about adding widgets to my phone. I found a site for iPhone widgets (not dashboard widgets) and want to get a couple on my phone.

However at the store yesterday, the guy warned me that adding widgets can be harmful if you don't know what you are doing. I have been with apple for over a year now so i am pretty familiar with the procedures.

How do i go about adding widgets to my iPhone w/o screwing everything up after 1 day?

I assume just find an iPhone widget site and send em to the phone. Am i missing something? Thanks for the help.

well I refuse to hack my brand new iPhone. I called apple and she said to bookmark the webapps. That seems to work so far but only thing is that u dont get the cool app logo on the main interface. Anyone else do it this way?

That's the only way, unless you hack it. Official 3rd party apps should be around February time, when Apple releases the Software Development Kit.

There are a lot of people that install the apps on the phone where they show up on the main screen, but you cannot do it unless you hack the phone.

IMHO it is not worth it. I hacked my phone back when it was runing 1.0.2. It was pretty cool for about a week. Then I realized that my phone was not as stable as before. The coolness wore off pretty quick and when Apple updated the firmware, you lose all your hacks and installed apps. I never went back to a hacked phone. I have had the Apple firmware (unhacked) ever since. I will wait for Apple to open it up before I install anything else.

It is too much of a hasle for little gain. You will lose everything once you install any Apple update for your phone anyway.

I also think you are a little confused about the phone apps. The way the person told you to do it at Apple (bookmark the web page and access it that way) is the only supported way of running apps on an iPhone. Those are web apps and run over the internet. They are never installed on your phone. That is why you are bookmarking them and using them on the phones safari app. They are not actually on your phone.

The hacked apps are actually installed on the phone and you do not need the internet at all to run these. That is why the icon is on the main screen because they are actually stored on the phone and not being run over the internet.

So to answer your question if anybody else is doing it the bookmark way..... everyone who is using an unhacked phone has to do it that way. There is no other way without hacking the phone.... For now anyway.

understood completely.

i am just gonna do the bookmark the webapps thing. i am not gonna start hacking away when i just got the phone yesterday!

thanks for the responses guys.

and hey, while on topic...

any special webapps you guys use? anything you recommend?

right now i just have espn podcast and a couple games. need many more

I suggest using Mockdock.com. It allows you to select a number of web app sites/locations and uses an iPhone style interface/appearance. Popular web apps are available through Mockdock.com (including a macrumors.com web link).

it does use the internet .... you're not installing anything...
