Ok.. this is bizarre..

This morning I was doing work in an old county courthouse. This courthouse has alot of history and is somewhat of a heritage building. Inside the jailhouse on the second floor are some gallows. Still hanging in the gallows are the nooses (?? plural for noose - neese ?? lol), that were used for a double hanging in the oh I don't know, late 1800's maybe.

So I thought it'd be cool to take a picture with my phone. Snap.. look at the picture, looks good, put the phone back in my pocket and go about my business.

Tonight I pull out the phone and look. Go to camera.. picture of gallows is the thumbnail for camera roll since it is the last picture I took. Go into pictures and the last picture is a screenshot of my phones favourite list. No picture of the gallows. Back up, there it is again as the thumbnail for the camera roll. 45 pictures it sais. 45th picture is indeed a screenshot.. no picture of the gallows to be found anywhere. Plug into my computer.. same thing, no picture of the gallows and the folder for my pictures is 100 and the one screenshot is in a 999 folder.

How can this picture be a thumbnail, but not be there? And I have no idea how I would get a screenshot of my favourites list into my pictures. It did not save that when I took the picture, because the screenshot shows 8:30pm and the picture I took was maybe 9:30 am.

WTF?? Someone please tell me I'm an idiot and tell me what happened.

Did you snap the picture then turn your phone off straight away and pocket it or did you snap the picture, goto the camera roll and view it then turn your phone off?

I know that I took a few pictures just snapping it then pressing the off switch and when i've come back to the roll the picture wasn't saved. This has happened to me on a number of occasions. But there has never been a thumbnail for it like you described.

I would have waited untill the auto lock came on . ie. just put the phone in my pocket. I would understand if the picture did not save, but it IS the thumbnail for my camera roll. And there is this screenshot there too, which I can't explain or understand. The picture is nowhere to be found in my file structure on the phone except for this thumbnail.

Well, you get a screenshot if you use the "home" and "power" buttons together.

I would guess that what happened was - you took the photo, then thought you were closing the camera app and powering off, but you accidentally screenshotted. Why "favourites"? Again a guess - double tap "home" takes you to favourites.

So my guess is finger trouble with that damned "home" button and nothing to do with ghosts and hangings :)

But why does the picture that I took show up as a thumbnail, and the picture is nowhere to be found?

Thanks for the little tip on screenshots.. I didn't know that, and it IS handy to know.

Just guessing that it's a software bug. The thumbnails are separate files from the actual photos, so if things happened roughly the way I assumed, it might be that the photo file-save got overtaken by the screenshot file-save, but after the thumb had already been saved.

Either that or it WAS a ghost :)

Also can't explain why the screenshot was from 8:30 pm and the picture that I took was around 9am. Going to look into what time the hanging occured.

On a side note, this is the same courthouse where Sir John A. McDonald (Canada's first Prime Minister) won his first public office seat in an open election. Turns out he got in a fist fight with his opponent as well and ended up back in court the next day charged with assault. He was the county prosecutor at the time. Interesting eh?
