I have a 60GB macbook, which has had a whole gamut of troubles, but has been working ok since a battery replacement 2 weeks ago. Anyway, today the display has just got supersaturated and burnt out. It seems like a setting of some sort, as when I start up, it looks normal until halfway through start up, then it "burns out". It is hard to describe, but it looks as if I have chosen a saturate filter on an image, and all the window edges are really shiny.

Changing the brightness just dims, but doesn't fix this. I have looked everywhere for what setting has been changed, or even a "reset to factory display settings" option. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Have you reset PRAM?

Apple + Option + P + R

or what about when you plug into an external monitor

tried F1 & F2?

It seems that it "Could" be your inverter board but I really doubt that because of what your description says.

One more thing to try. start up holding option and see if the backlight dies on you then.

Thanks for your advice. I have tried some of your suggestions.

Resetting PRAM has not helped.
F1 and F2 change the brightness, which make it a bit easier to cope with, but don't change the issue (which looks like I have a great big spotlight shining over my shoulder making deep shadows and very brght highlights).

I have not tried an external monitor, but before trying that I created a new user account. That account has normal appearing display settings, so I figure it is not my hardware.

Holding option while starting up also has not changed anything. I have gone ahead and appzapped anything I have installed in the last few days, except for the parallels upgrade.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
