Hi,

does anyone know if Wifi Call is still shown as 'Wifi' in the top status bar on older models? I've read that models with a notch only show it in the control center overlay.
I have Wifi Call activated in settings, but I am not sure if it is actually working (which I doubt).

On my iPhone 12 Pro Max (control centre)

The wificall text will disappear if my phone thinks it’s got a strong enough mobile service though, even on the same WiFi. Unfortunately that’s how EE designed it.

Thanks. So you're suggesting it depends on the provider rather than the OS?

I get Wifi Calling at home as its a poor signal there and on my old 6S it showed wifi calling on the top bar, now i'm on a 12 it only shows in the Control Centre. This has worked both on Three when i was with them and now Sky Mobile plus my wife gets it on her O2 phones. My dad however is with Giff Gaff and has no option to enable it in the settings on his phone as they dont have the functionality.

As mentioned the phone decides when it needs to use if the option is available. I have seen times, mainly on the wife's O2 phone where for some reason it wont switch to Wifi calling and it either needs the setting to be turned off and back on or the phone to be rebooted to get it working again.

Yes I believe that’s how it works. I don’t like EE‘s Wi-Fi calling but it’s the only one I can use. As far as I’m concerned if it’s connected to a Wi-Fi network it should constantly use Wi-Fi calling but unfortunately it doesn’t do that and does dynamic switching instead.

I see, thanks. I also remembered that with my old provider it used wifi calling even in airplane mode, so I should be able to force it that way. I guess it doesn't work yet with my current provider despite having the option to enable it in the settings menu.

My EE does not dynamic switch, it on WiFi calling all the time I am at home. Never seen it switch off WiFi calling when I’m at home on my WiFi.

My old o2 contract was very hit and miss and never used to jump on to WiFi call and would sometimes need to be forced.

Vodafone before that would also always connect to WiFi calling when at home.

Just for reference I’m in the UK :)

In that case, and as EE have designed it to work, your phone has determined that the signal is not strong enough from the mobile carrier and is using Wi-Fi calling constantly. Now of course you may have a decent signal but the iPhone is interpreting it incorrectly. But, that’s how it’s designed to work. And I hate it working like that

Edit: forgot to add that where I live in the UK, I am right on the outskirts of the EE network which is why mine keeps swapping to and fro.

Could it be that you have that iOS feature turned on that uses cellular over wifi when wifi is considered too weak? Maybe that's what's causing the Wifi calling to switch as well?

My signal in my house is really poor, no matter what network your on, its like my walls are made of lead, this maybe why its always on WiFi calling, but as soon as i move to the garden the signal on the iPhone is full strength but it still sits on the WiFi!

I always thought that WiFi Calling would always pick WiFi over GSM/4G

Settings, mobile data, all the way at the bottom, "wi-fi assist"

Oh God sorry yes that. No I don’t believe it is that.

When I’ve mentioned this to EE in the past about it swapping, they say that is exactly how it is designed because, and whether this is true or not, each time a call is made by Wi-Fi calling it costs them money. Personally I find that a little bit hard to believe. But I know other people on EE Wi-Fi calling that their’s also swap depending on the EE signal strength.
