My WIFI calling works most of the time but sometimes it does not work. Tried the usual troubleshooting steps to no avail so I am thinking I am dealing with a Sprint problem or a bug in IOS 11.

Sprint favors their network over using Wifi calling. Overall a voice call made over sprints cellular network (assuming reception is favorable) is better than using Wifi calling.

Emergency services get spotty over wifi calling and most providers will switch to cellular if you dial 911 for better location services. Sprints HD Voice isn't available over wifi calling. While they support a hand off from Wifi to cellular its generally comes with a break in service. Wireless priority service and gov emergency telecom isn't supported over Wifi calling (in case you are a first responder). Pretty sure TTY doesn't work with wifi calling on sprint. SMS will work but MMS messaging does not work over Sprints Wifi calling.

Those things plus some stuff I'm probably forgetting is why Sprint favors their cellular network, its just better (again assuming reception is good). Of course the major benefit with wifi calling is when you have poor cellular service you'll be able to make phone calls.

Point is if you got a good Sprint cellular connection you are better off. However with an iPhone you force wifi calling by setting the phone to airplane mode and setting wifi on. If you force it and it works fine its probably just the algorithms they used to decide on wifi and cellular.

I have Verizon, and I'm generally on Verizons Wifi calling at home. However if I download a large file from Apple or Sony (playstation) it will switch me back to cellular because both Apple and Sony can completely saturate my internet. So check to make sure no one is downloading a large file from a faster server. If you dont have a bare minimum of 1 Mbps for even a second it will switch off wifi calling. And that is a bare minimum I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint wasnt looking for 5+ mbps constant.

Call Sprint though they might be able to help you out. Also check to make sure your Carrier firmware is up to date.

Its working fine now. Like I said it works fine most of the time, just on occasion it does not.
