WIFI CALLING WITHOUT SIM?

Am I asking the impossible?........

Just replaced my old, factory unlocked iPhone 5S with new, factory unlocked iPhone XR
Installed its old nano sim in new phone
Since I'm almost always connected to wifi I tend to use wifi calling (rather than cellular) pretty much exclusively.

Should I be able to continue to receive and answer incoming wifi calls on the 5s, which is now sim-less?

When I go to Settings on it the Phone app is greyed out and it now says "NO SIM" beside the forward arrow.
I'm unable to open it.

Other than what's described above - I have full use of all the old phones other features (including wifi connectivity etc.)

My Carrier is T-Mobile
I have only 1 line - and don't want a second.

I just want both iPhones to ring when there's an incoming call (and hopefully also be able to answer incoming calls on either device).
In effect - I'd like the old phone to function like an extension phone for the XR - since I often miss calls (depending on where I happen to be in relation to my phone) - in my 2 story house.

Any ideas/thoughts anyone?

If I am not mistaken, you should be able to utilize the handoff/continuity feature to share the calls via iCloud email address.

Jumped on to your link (thanks!).....but it looks like all the choices described are for linking one kind of device to another....or at least not for linking phone to phone, which is what I need (I think....but won't pretend to entirely understand).......hope I'm wrong - but don't know how to proceed......

If you don't have a SIM card, you iPhone is, for all intents and purposes, an iPod. It should work exactly the same way... or as an iPad with/without cellular radios.

But (I think it's wi-fi calls I need...in any case I'm unable to do what it says since step 5 below...
Settings >phone > is now greyed out (as I said in OP):

Set up iPhone Cellular Calls
You can use iPhone Cellular Calls with any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that meets the Continuity system requirements. It works when your devices are near each other and set up as follows:

• Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
• Each device is signed in to FaceTime with the same Apple ID.
• Each device has Wi-Fi turned on.
• Each device is connected to the same network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
• On your iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices, then turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices.
• On your iPad or iPod touch, go to Settings > FaceTime, then turn on Calls from iPhone.

So...I think you've hit upon what's needed - but still can't figure out steps needed to accomplish it
