So it turns out, on both my 3G and my wife's (3.0), if left unplugged and wifi on, even though in sleep mode, the battery was draining significantly faster overnight compared to wifi off and connected to 3G. Don't remember this being the case on 2.2 or below. I have not tested this with the wifi router off and leaving wifi on but I can definitely see a difference with the wifi off by a good 20% of battery be saved. Just a heads up. 
 
Just because you turn wifi on, it will still stay connected to 3G for things like phone calls and text messages, so i could see that using more battery. If you don't care about missing calls when your sleeping you could put your phone in airplane mode and turn wifi on.
