I am switching Internet providers and the one I am switching to only provides a modem. With my current provider they provide a modem/router to which I hard-wired a Linksys MX 4000 series mesh system (3 nodes). Do I need to get a router or can I connect the Linksys Mesh system to the modem? i.e. is the Mesh system also a router? If I need a router, do I have to stick with Linksys or can I get any router (looking at Asus RT AX88u)?

5. Can my Linksys Velop MX4000 Series node replace a router?

Yes, you can replace your standard router with the Linksys MX4000 Series nodes. Click here for instructions.

Google is a powerful tool sometimes :p

But on a general node, networking is pretty standardised. While you won’t need a separate router here, any brand router should be able to work with any brand wi-fi access point

Appreciate the quick response. I agree Google is a great source but you need to understand the lingo and I could not find (understand maybe) the clean answer as you just gave.

Given that, is there a reason/advantage to getting a stand alone router or does it matter. I have fairly straightforward uses but a tons of devices (47) on my wifi network (security cameras, Wemo switches, TVs, locks, etc).

With that sort of thing, the general advice is "If you don't already know you need it, you don't". I'm sure your Linksys can hold routing tables for hundreds of devices
