My 2017 iMac is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable and I leave the wifi on the computer turned off as the ethernet connection is faster than my wifi. I have other wifi only devices around the house so I have not shut off wifi at the router. I have one application on my computer, a game, that somehow turns the computer's wifi to 'on' every time I launch the game. How is this possible and how do I stop this app from turning on the wifi? I guess it's not a big deal, just something that makes you go Hmmm and scratch your head.

Try going to system preferences > Network and removing your Wi-Fi service?

Something else you could try:

Go the the network preference pane, and choose to "set service order" (the "gear" icon in the lower-left-hand corner), and set ethernet at the top, and wifi underneath it.

When set this way, the computer should always connect via ethernet "first", even with wifi turned on.

So this way, you get the fastest connection speed.
