I have an intel 2020 iMac that came with big sur 11.3 and my old usb printer, a canon pixma IP4500, no longer has drivers.
if I buy a wifi capable printer, will it work with big sir vía wifi or not? Will I still need one that has big sur drivers?
Can anyone please suggest a cheap a4 inkjet printer that works with big sur?
Thanks for any advice.

I have no specific recommendations for a printer. But look for a printer that is "airprint" compatible. EG our old Epson WF-Pro 4730 works just fine in Big Sur.
Good luck.

If you're shopping around, it doesn't hurt to go to the manufacturer's site and check out what drivers they have for the model before buying. They may be more recent than those included with the printer. And / or check out the owner's manual (also probably available for download) to check out the process for adding it as a wi-fi printer. Also a quickie Google to check out user reviews / issues can be helpful.

I have an Epson ET-250 that does wi-fi printing - I seem to recall it was multiple steps to add it - definitely not the plug and play of adding a printer with a cable. But I can also email it directly with articles to print.

And I have a HP Laserjet that I've never succeeded in getting to connect up wirelessly. Ever. Convoluted instructions that in the end didn't work anyway. It remains connected by cable.

I had this same problem. You need to install an updated driver froth canon website. You may also need to remove the printer in settings and then add it again. There may be additional steps which I have forgotten, but I got this to work on two intel Macs and an M1 Mac, the latter of which was a real nightmare.

I’m using an Epson Workforce 7520, had it about 8 years. Never any problems with Big Sur and the printer. It’s usb, wi-fi, and AirPrint. I use it over wi-fi.

depending un your usage case, think very hard between inkjet vs. laser. I’ll take inkjet every time. Laser is fine for very occasional needs. Also, laser print will "crack" when folded. Lastly, if you want one and can get one, you’ll give up your first-born for a 13" x 19" capability.

Thirty-six years (ret) as a print creative director. From comps to mock-ups to displays for trade shows. Even retired I only use inkjet with 13 x 19 cabability.

there is more than one Canon site (global, US, Europe, several Asian ones, and more) and confusingly they often seem to offer different software. I got mine from Canon Europe in March.
thanks, but I have checked them all and they all report that there are no drivers for the ip4500 after mountain lion and that one won't install on my big sur iMac.
