Greetings

I believe I may be in need of service for my iPhone 3G/16GB. I purchased it used in June, but it was essentially "new" as it was a replacement for the previous owner's damaged unit. (They upgraded to a 3GS on AT&T). It's been unlocked with the Dev-Team tools. I only have service with T-Mo (USA) and don't have any connection with AT&T. The phone had been working perfectly on T-Mo for me!!

Here's my problem ... for the past couple of days, I have NO Wi-Fi connectivity. Everything else seems to be working OK. When I switch the Wi-Fi on, I get the quick moving circle that shows its searching, then nothing. I have tried in several locations, and get the same results. (All locations had previously worked flawlessly.) Since it worked so well up to this time, and I have done nothing to change anything ... not even the 3.01 update ... I suspect a hardware problem.

I'm reluctant to try a restore using either pawnage or redsn0w as I would need WiFi for Ultrasn0w ... which may be problematic.

I checked, and there is still warranty coverage until August 9. Of course, I can extend that by purchasing AppleCare - which I don't really mind doing.

I have an Apple Store nearby, and clearly I can't bring it in with my T-Mo SIM installed!! But, since I have no AT&T stuff ... am I out of luck? I was thinking that perhaps I should get a cheap pre-paid phone/sim from AT&T and use that?

Basically, I have no idea if its possible to obtain service or how to go about getting service.

Thanks in advance.

Ken

If you unlock/jailbreak your iPhone you automatically void the warranty. You will have to have it checked at a general phone repair shop as an Apple Store will probably refuse to repair it for you and it will be out of your warranty (meaning you will have to pay the repair).

get a at&t go sim card.

pop it in for the time being while you go in there... do it quickly, with 3.1 coming out soon your chances to jailbreak a 3gs will be slim to none after that.

redsn0w and purplrain problematic? how so?

If you bring it in jailbroken or unlocked they will refuse to work on it.
But if you do either unlock or jailbreak just restore the phone as a new phone prior to brining it in for a service.
if they ask why its restore you can say you wanted to see if that resolved the problem.

not sure if you have seen this

Thanks for the Apple KB reference .... I tried that all the way down to the system restore.

As I understand it, after running redsn0w, a 3G will be jailbroken but not unlocked for a non-AT&T network. You need to run Ultrasn0w to do that. I thought that I would need a wi-fi connection to go to Cydia and get Ultrasn0w since the Edge connection through T-Mo would not be available.

I'm just afraid that IF there is a Wi-Fi hardware issue, running a restore - even with redsn0w - will leave me with an AT&T only phone!! Essentially, a brick for me. (Lot's of reasons why AT&T is a non player for me ... not the least of which is no bars at my home/office!! T-Mo works perfectly!!)

Thanks in advance for any assistance or clarification if I have the sequence wrong.

Cheers!!

If you restore and Wi-Fi still doesn't work, then it is clearly a hardware fault, as you would have eliminated software.

Take it into the Apple store freshly restored and with no SIM. If they ask why, just say that you wiped it to make sure it wasn't software and to remove your data. If they ask for the SIM, you forgot it.

Bluetooth problem

Hey guys I was wondering if any one else is having a problem with their Bluetooth after upgrading to 3.0.1, I also have it jailbroken and now the phone won't pair up with the car stereo anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
