The iphone seamlessly switches between edge and wifi, supposedly, my question is about wifi hotspots. Maybe im off base but dont most all wifi hotspots require a password to join, how many freely open wifi spots are there in your experience? If most do require a password the only place you use it would be somewhere were you know the password and would probably have a computer there anyways.

aye but arent most of the ones say in a starbucks, while your randomly driving going to require a password. Whats a general location for free service

I'm hoping that ATT will have something like T-Mobile hotspot. Maybe even have it as an option on the monthly plan.

A lot of the independent (read: good) cafes in urban areas have free wifi.

In my neighborhood (and pretty much anywhere else I go) there's always at least one open network. Some of the local businesses' networks are protected, but you can get the password at the counter.

It'll be no different than finding WiFi with a notebook, which is getting easier every day.

my question is if im driving through san fransico or some larger area with wifi will it constantly ask me to enter a password as i am surfing the web?

at&t already has this. T-mo's is just more prominent because its what starbucks uses. you can buy a wi-fi plan from att for like 40 a month to use all of att's wifi hotspots but there much fewer and further between than t-mo's. i've seen some airports with them but not too many other places.

It's simple - it will act the same way as a notebook would. Look at the AirPort options in Network:

"AirPort remembers the networks this computer has joined. If none of the remembered networks are available, AirPort will automatically join an open network." You can change this in Options.

Preferred network > Open network > Join closed network manually. Common sense.

40 a month for a spotty wifi, i dont know if that worth it and i hope that the free spots do become for prevalent. And thats a good question if your driving around town, something that you dont really do with a laptop itll be bouncing network to network which could get annoying if its constantly asking for passwords in the middle of browsing

Reportedly it will ask you before joining any new network. If you do join, it's supposed to remember automatically for the next time. (I would hope that's programmable... sometimes you want to delete one from the list.)

Yes. There is a setting for this.

Uh...

Maybe you should focus on either using the iPhone or DRIVING. Tough to do both.

But its really easy to drive and use my iphone, in my new icar.
I just have to activate the icar option in the iphone, and I can drive without even looking out the window.

or I could just be sitting in the passenger seat.;)

oh yeah...

Someday "iDrive" will be standard on all new cars. You just sit back and let your iPhone find its way.

In my experience with the Nokia N800 tablet, trying to use wi-fi on the go was a disaster. As I understand, wi-fi has a range, thus it's a hot SPOT (correct me if I am wrong, anyone).

I took the tablet into the city (NYC midtown/Times Square) where I live and work. I searched for networks while walking (just as a test). of course it gave me a list of open/unlocked networks, but as I walked, I walked out of their range. I also did this test in a cab.

At work (Times Square), it located a free wi-fi network and later an AT&T network.

Unfortunately I noticed that it connected to many wi-fi networks, but would not establish a network connection?? Or something?? I was connected, but it would not allow me to open any web pages. I got a network error.

I don't know if this was specific to the Nokia or if this is an issue with public wi-fi hot spots in general. It turned me off big time, and I returned the Internet tablet.

On my MBP at work, I can connect o a free Internet service, but when I go to a page, it gives an error also: unable to Connect.

It's for that reason that I simply don't expect to use wi-fi on the iPhone except on those where I have an account or that are truly open, which to me has been at folks' homes and at Bryant Park in NYC. Unfortunaly I expect too go from 3G to EDGE while on the go.

I hope I'm wrong.

you would be correct, lilnyc. you cannot drive around and expect to connect to a wifi hotspot. its not going to happen.

makes sense, so most net usage will be over edge.... hope that buff they gave the network worked :apple:

But how secure is just joining any ol' Wifi network? I've used T-Mobile hotspots before (when they had that free deal for .Mac members), but I dunno how I feel about just connecting to any ol' wifi signal that comes through. How "safe" is it to use free wifi at a place, generally?
