My iPhone 4S and iPad 2 just refuses to sync with my iTunes. They're on the same network, I've even put all devices on 2.4Ghz but still, the sync just refuses to start. Can't sync unless I connect the cable - what's going on?

For those of you that have succeeded in making this work, are you all on Lion? (I'm still on SL) Can't really figure out what else I'm missing - it just seems like the devices refuse to recognize that the other is available even though all devices can see each other on the network.

I'm still on SL and it works perfectly.

Did you remember to tether your devices to the computer, then check the "Sync with this (device) over Wi-Fi" box under SUMMARY and click "Apply"? They won't do WiFi sync before you complete this step via the USB cable.

well i just got done and i had to usb to comp first then select sync under wifi. then after that it wouldn't sync. i was reading that if you unselect ringtones or apps or all of them it will work(there could be a problem syncing all the way). mine was the apps. bad news it removed over 350 apps in 5 sec. all my data in each app is gone and now i have 15 pages of apps i have to organize again. also i have lion. just watch what you do. do a backup before you do anything if you can. i didn't

Interesting...

I do have Sync over Wifi enabled. I also do not have "prevent syncing" checked under Preferences > Devices. Turn iTunes on when connected is also unchecked.

I do ask that it sync apps but I only sync certain ringtones - I wonder if that's the issue here.

I was having the same issue. I did two things that solved my issue: I opened itunes on my imac, plugged in my iphone, and in the summary tab, I checked the sync over wifi box. Then I shut down my iphone and my imac, then powered both back up.

Works great now!

Also, make sure iTunes is open and running on your computer you want to sync with.

Cool, the reboot worked great in helping the Mac connect with the iPad 2, but the computer will no longer recognize the iPhone 4S unless it's plugged in. So weird... all the same settings too.

RESOLVED
Props to Fatboy71 for the following:
Part 1 -
I'm on Windows.

I went into Services and looked for the service called APPLE MOBILE DEVICE. I then right clicked on it and choose RESTART from the menu. Since doing this I've been able to wirelessly sync again on both the iPad and iPhone. Perhaps the APPLE MOBILE DEVICE had crashed or stopped working for some reason?

Part 2-
Mine will sync now but comes back with an error on the PC "itunes cannot sync apps because the apps installed cannot be determined"

Resolved (via apple discussion board)
i went to device manager (control panel - view by icons - device manager) then right clicked my pcs name and clicked "scan for hardware changes" i then restarted itunes and everything iss working

simple fix for me..

My iPad was connected via wifi but not my iphone 4 with ios5.. read a few messages here and came up with a solution for me. Connected iPhone to PC with usb cable set all the correct settings in the summery window on itunes and checked apply.. then shut down itunes with everything connected, restarted it unplugged the iphone & i'm good to go..

I got it on mine working with windows 7. I just had to have the PC on, and itunes open, then I would see it pop up in itunes and start wifi sync.
