Wifi vs EDGE loading times .. discuss

As most of you know the Apple iPhone will have WiFi , and since the only glimpses we've had of the iPhone in use have been 2nd hand this post goes unknowing stating that the iPhone has been showing off its stuff under WiFi.

The new ad showing the iPhone and safari on the iPhone my guess is connected via Wifi (snappy loading etc)

Now I just bought a Blackberry Curve/8300 and it is a great phone. I can browse the internet and while I get the "dumbed down" internet as Jobs called it, it does take a little bit of time to load. It also just had EDGE.

Do you all think the iPhone will be able to handle its iPhone Safari speeds we've seen in ads/keynotes when it's only connecting to the internet via EDGE?

Unless I've missed something about iPhone and 3G, let me know. I think the EDGE iPhone safari experience might be a little bit, well uh not what we've been told its going to be?

Yes, you're right... EDGE on a good day will be like WiFi on a really bad day.

The ad's cache the pages. They are loading from internal memory, not from the internet. For example, when they zoom in on google maps, the images are preloaded to speed up what we see.

Plus, the NY Times pages are all dated back in October. I thought these were accessed and stored locally. It is my understanding that apple keeps compositing those pages. Of course, that is just what I remember reading in other threads... I am basing that off other people.

well, not really, edge really sucks ass by todays standards, wifi completely blows its away, these are the max speeds

GPRS (2.5G) - 17KB/s Download
EDGE (2.75G) - 25KB/s Download
UMTS (3G) - 48KB/s Download
1.5-2.5Mbit Internet connection - 192KB/s - 320KB/s Download
HSDPA (3.5G) - 230.4KB/s - 1843.2KB/s Download
WiFi - 2560KB/s Download
future (4G) - 12800KB/s Download (this number is theoretical)


see the diffrence? apple is almost 3 generations behind as 4G is around the corner. My TyTN is 1.5yrs old and it supports UMTS/HSDPA which means it 3.5G capable. Its just stupid to use out of date technology, apple REALLY should of made their iphone multiband umts/HSDPA for compatibility for future technologies.

I'm really getting annoyed at the lack of info just 17 days from launch. Especially the AT&T plan info. People gotta plan & figure this out if they want one sooner rather than later. I'm going to have to assume the info will be out a week or 2 prior.

Anyway, to confirm.... Going from Edge to 3g requires a hardware change (totally new phone version). It's not a software or swap a card out type thing.... Right?

17 Days is still rather a long ways away yet.

I'm sure apple will announce the exacts within at least a week till launch.

correct because UMTS requires a new antenna (diffrent frequency) as well as the chip.
