My 2006 mac mini runs Lion 10.7.5 just fine. It needs a bit of hacking, though:
- swapped the cpu to a Core2Duo T7200 (64bit cpu)
- upgraded EFI to mac mini 2,1 - now recognizes 4GB memory
- Lion install - PlatformSupport.plist was deleted

After all of the above it runs Lion nicely, GeekBench scores above 3000.

The latest my 2006 iMac 1.86GHz Core Duo will run is Snow Leopard. Core Duos are 32-bit processors. Lion requires 64-bit but even the first Core 2 Duos released in 2006 don't qualify.

Do that and you'll be fine.
