iPod Will a new Ipod Classic sitting on the shelf for a year or two have problems?

Hi all

If anyone can help me on this one ASAP I would appreciate it hugely...

I'm going to see an iPod Classic later today which someone is selling locally. They said they bought it but never used it. As such, it has been sitting unused (and "as new") for a year or two.

Is there likely to be any issues with it for the fact that it has not been used? I guess I'm thinking along the lines of the battery and the hard drive (as it is mechanical). But there may be other things to consider which I have not thought of.

My 2005 iPod still holds a full charge and runs just as long and it MAYBE gets poked at once or twice a year.
 
If lithium batteries actually get to zero charge, they are permanently dead. Not "0%" on a software display, which is adjusted to make sure this doesn't happen, but actual physical nothing. Which is possible with a battery that's been sitting for years.

So, start by telling him to charge it before meeting. Then take a couple minutes to check it out.

I can confirm this. My 2007 MB came with a free iPod nano. I used it very little the first two years and then it sat two maybe three years until I decided I'd give it to a friend of mine. It will only turn on when connected to power. The battery is dead. Not weak; dead.
 
I was gonna suggest the same. The battery after sitting so long without a charge would need to be replaced.

You can check that device.

1. Hard drive: see if it doesn't create noticeable sound while spinning.
2. Battery: I have iPOD classic from 2010. its 3 years and no complains but i use it within a month. charge carrying capacity of battery will deplete over the time.
You can ask him to change battery or reduce the battery amount & you will get it replace.

what ever suits you both.

It does make some noise when operating. Doesn't sound particularly unhealthy though. I think I'd describe it as a whirring noise. Does that sound normal? Are they supposed to be totally silent?
 
The iPod Classic was never silent. What you describe is normal operational noise, as it has a mechanical harddrive that needs to spin.

If it's dead, check the Apple support site for the cost of a new battery. Obviously take that into account with the price.
