some g4s don't allow large drives.

i had to buy a pci card (which was quite pricey) to hook up two 250gig drives in my sawtooth

Indeed, only the Quicksilver 2002 and later will handle 137gb or larger HDDs without some minor tweaking or a new PATA or SATA card.

In general though, hard drives will work in any computer that has the same interface (pata, sata, scsi) and the same size (2.5" for notebooks, 3.5" for desktops except mini). Any old 3.5" pata drive will work in a powermac G4, and if it's over 137gb it'll just show up at 137gb unless you tweak the firmware or get a pci card.

When I had to install a drive larger the the 137gb max I installed SpeedTools ATA Hi-Cap Support Driver for MacOS X. it does cost $25, but then you can install larger drives say 300g with out doing anything extra.
