If I buy AppleTV the next time I'm in the USA and bring it back to the UK, will I have any problems with it?

Eg. Will I need to get a new power supply? Will the video format conflict with the UK PAL format?

Hardware wise, it will. However, you'll have little use for it other than streaming from your computer and renting movies. You won't have TV shows or Netflix.

I have a related question of my own if anybody can answer it: If I have a US account, will the TV show rentals stream to another country? For reference, signing in with an account other than the US will eliminate Netflix and TV Shows from the menus.

First, you'd need a Netflix account in the first place, which you need a US registered credit card to do so that can't be done from abroad.

I don't see anything wrong with just buying the UK one, you won't get anything special from the US one if you're using it in the UK.

Not much different from buying one in the UK then.

Oh, and we do have TV shows on iTunes in the UK, just not some of the recent US stuff.

It's a lot cheaper in the US.

Is it really? The UK one is total price at £99 (including VAT), but I understand that sales and local tax (?) has to be added to the $99 US price. What would be the total US price if bought in New York for example?

purchasing in NYC will incur a 4% state sales tax. But then there's also a city sales tax on top of that which brings the combined total to 8.75%
(8% seems to be a good average for combined sales tax)

so, $99 + tax = $106.92
This, in real money, is £67.25

so you'd save £32
but from that saving you need to deduct the cost of the airplane flight :D

so if you're the type to fly back and forth across the pond with regularity and you can wait until the next time you're stateside, then you'll save a bit of cash :)

Or you can use Entropay virtual card which is accepted by Netflix. Of course you'd also need a good VPN in the US to actually watch it. But it can be done, I have Netflix and Hulu working perfectly in the UK.

Do you mind sharing what VPN software you are using?

Thanks

Thanks

I use vpnuk.info - their dedicated IP package for £9.99/m and there are others like strongvpn.com . You can shop around, just search google for VPN US server. I've tried using free VPN packages but usually their speed is very slow.

Once you sign up, they send you step-by-step instructions on how to set it up. The VPN works with built-in clients on iPad, iPhone, Windows, OSX and Linux and takes about 2 mins to configure.

Once configured, you can connect and browse Hulu, ABC, NBC, CBS and watch most TV shows for free and in good quality (with ads). It also works with Hulu desktop app, Boxee, Netflix on iPad, ABC player on iPad etc.

If you want Netflix - sign-up to top-up entropay virtual visa card first and use it in payment info for Netflix. It will accept this card with any zip code you provide to them.
