just saw on the news that airdrop is being used to send nude photos on planes. Just yesterday it caused a delay for a plane leaving Tel Aviv when someone shared photos of plane crashes and the interior of that plane.
 
Next controversy? This isn't anything new. I remember this getting more coverage when AirDrop was first released. Don't want to receive unsolicited content? Make sure your AirDrop setting is set to Receiving Off, or Contacts Only (which is the default setting).

I keep Airdrop off unless I need to use it... It's a great solution to eliminate the situation you've described
 
I can't say enough people around me use airdrop for it to be an issue. If anything, my problem is the exact opposite.

Happy problems, I guess. The more people use a particular feature, the higher the chances of someone misusing it.
