iPhone X Will ALL new iPhones be unlock for ALL carriers

I read the same modem will be in ALL iPhones and the modem will be unlocked (Carrier Free) for ALL carriers.
Is this true? If yes I assume there would be no need for an unlocked version.

I doubt that is true.

All four carriers and smaller carriers would scream bloody murder if it was.

Although if you are buying a carrier version direct from Apple under it's IUP program then, yeah- unlocked. Maybe that's what was meant.

Then yes. This is already the case. Any iPhone bought full price from Apple is unlocked.

Correct me if I am wrong but if you previously if you purchased a Verizon phone it works on all carriers except Sprint. If you bought an ATT version then it would not work on Sprint and Verizon. Thats the change I am referring to, this year the ATT unlocked phone will work as the Verizon model and work on ALL carriers except Sprint.

Then I believe it’ll be unlocked, but this has been the case for quite a few years now. The only issues I’ve heard of were phones being locked due to the unlock policy issued to phones purchased full price at Best Buy.

That has nothing to do with the phone being locked or unlocked. The Verizon/sprint models were capable of working on all major networks, while the AT&T/T-Mobile models only had GSM capable LTE modems.

Then the words you are choosing to use aren't what you mean.

An unlock means to SIM-unlock a phone for use on any carrier. Unlocks have nothing to do at all with the modem. Whether the modem is capable of using the frequency bands of any given carrier is a design thing.

You can have an unlocked iPhone that cannot work on one carrier or the other because of it's modem. It's still unlocked, but because of the modem it's incapable.

Conversely, you can have a phone that is capable, because of it's modem, of being used on many carriers. But because it's SIM-Locked it will only function on the original carrier until unlocked. Again, that has nothing to do with the modem.

Wasn’t there a thread on the front page awhile back saying Verizon was going to start locking their phones to their network? I don’t remember any date given as to when it was planned to take effect just curious if anyone had any information on the subject..

There was. I think the time frame was some time around June of this year. I may be wrong though.

But yeah, they are going to start locking them if they aren't paid off, i.e., if you buy them on a lease or something.
