Will an Australian iPhone work in the Canada?

I'm considering buying an iPhone 3GS here in Australia, from the Apple store, outright it costs AU$879.

But I might be moving to Canada at the end of this year, so will my iPhone 3GS work in Canada (and the US) if I just get a new SIM card after i move?

You'll need a Canadian GSM SIM card from a carrier such as Rodgers.

Rogers is good, just avoid Fido. I've had experience with both.

Factory unlocked iPhones work anywhere there is a GSM carrier. You just need to buy a SIM card and activate the phone using iTunes.

It won't lock the phone as the unlock involves the IMEI number and a central database showing which are and aren't unlocked.

I wonder what I'd have to do for Apple to stick my IMEI number in their database. Whatever it is I likely couldn't do the time for it.

Here you just pay your provider a nominal fee and they'll do it.

All of the new iPhone 3GS units sold by Apple in Austraila in the Apple.com store are sold SIM "Unlocked". You just need to get a new SIM once you get to Canada. Just a reminder that you will not have any warranty coverage in Canada for your iPhone 3GS that you purchase in Australia.

The part number determines where the iPhone designated to be sold and the warranty is only valid in that country.
